My first test piece was "Young in Heart" by Eric Ball, at the 1991 CISWO Contest in Blackpool, with Buckhaven and Methil Miners Band, in the fourth section. I was only 11 or 12 and it was really exciting going all the way to Blackpool from a wee quiet Scottish town. My first Championship section test piece was "Contest Music" by Wilfred Heaton at Pontins in 1999(I think) with Stalybridge. It's been one of my favourite pieces ever since.

Now I feel really old.

My first contest was at the Royal Festival Hall with my youth band (remember that one Rach?), but my first testpiece one was 2nd section at Pontins 1999 - can anyone remember what the testpiece was?! Something like Swiss excursion i think.

First championship testpiece was Whitsun Wakes

I remember it well! How drunk was I??

It was either Plantagenets or James Curnow's "Laude." I don't remember which was the Test Piece and which was the Choice Piece, because I played in Illinois Brass Band in 1994 for only a few rehearsals, and I didn't go to the NABBA Competition with the band that year. So those two pieces probably don't count as my "official first test piece."

Gareth Wood's "Hinemoa" was the Test Piece for the NABBA Challenge Section in 1998 and the first test piece that I ever played in the actual Competition. Prairie Brass Band, which was founded that year, took first place in their very first competition entry!

I didn't even get as far as the pub! Being the youngest one in the band at only 12 I was firmly escorted round London by my mother!

(I've made up for it since tho! )

My first was Main Street Variations - 3rd section Yorkshire Areas 1999
This was a real culture shock as I had previously played only with a training band. Off Beats :?: Bb Bass Solo :?: Changing time signatures :?:
We came second to last but the contesting bug had bitten :?

Closely followed by Malvern Suite, Little Suite for Brass and one that several other have mentioned - Haslemere Suite
This is my personal favourite - could have something to do with the fact that we (Oughtibridge) qualified for the 2000 4th section finals held that year in the Albert Hall. :D

Mine was Main Street when I was 9 playing Crash cymbal, gong, and glock when the man told me to hit it!!! :p  (It was only a 1 off thing though!) But actually playing horn and knowing what it was all about was last year playing Passacaglia (sp?) at the area :D

I was lucky that for my first brass band contest, it was a Light Entertainment type event.

My first contest with test pieces was in 1995, where I comted C grade at the Nationals. The test was Celtic Suite, and our own choice was Music for a Festival.

First test piece

This is probably going to be a bit vague, hopefully someone out there can help!! My fist contest was the area with Arbroath instrumental band in the 4th section. It was a piece called Suite for Brass I think, anyway, we came second and qualified for London and had to play Contrasten by one of the De Hann brothers.

Can anyone remind me what the test piece was and who wrote it, it would have been 1990 - 1991 ish!!!!!!!!

Thanks!!
