Who is John Howarth? I ask because I've just acquired a second hand copy of the 2018 CD, Black Dyke Gold Volume 7 and on it is a (brilliant) big band arrangement of Jerome Kern's Ol' Man River by said Mr Howarth. The thing is, it's strikingly similar to another arrangement of the same piece by the late Mark Freeh, as recorded on the GUS Band's milestone CD Freeh-Way way back in the 1980s. And when I say 'strikingly similar', what I mean is that it's exactly the same arrangement as far as I can hear, apart from the fact that the 'Howarth' version has some bars cut out. Can anyone shed any light on the matter?
