what to do?

ok wen im older i would like to be a primary school teacher. at the mo im in year 10 studying drama, IT, music and spanish (along with all the compulsory ones i.e maths science english) i was wondering wot subjects i should study for A level and also wot unis i could apply to go to and wot to study there!

planning for the future here so any info would be nice!

Well I don't know much about primary school teaching, but I'd imagine the likes of English or Maths at A-Level would be helpful. Other than that though I think it's fairly free.

I have a mate at Warwick Uni doing primary school teaching with Maths, so that might be worth looking into.

yeh, i'm only in yr 11, and i wanna teach at secondary level, but i've been told that warwick is a great place to train for it. consider it. as for subjects, i would imagine that english maths and probably science (altho i wouldnt say thats as important i may be wrong, feel free to correct me) and a choice of 2 others. u should get careers advice that will inform u further of the options open to u and wot to do

Am about to embark on a primary school teaching course. I did Chemistry, Biology and Maths at Alevel and that was ok to get me in~ I think a core subject may help.
Get lots of work experience and be prepared to have quite competitive interviews (with English and Maths tests :shock: )

core subjects are compulsory like maths, english etc. I don't know about England but in Scotland to become a primary school teacher, you don't need Higher/A level maths!
I'd stick with your music and drama - they will look good on your cv.

My College (York St John) offers a QTS course for students wishing to become music specialists in primary Schools. Candidates must have A Level music and normally two other subjects, but it doesn't particularly matter which ones. GCSEs in English, Maths and Science are essential and we normally expect players to be around Grade VII/VIII standard.

Try to get as much work experience in primary school as possible.

A few of my mates r going off 2 uni at da end of this yr to do teaching (both primary and secondary) and all they were asked for was Grade C and above in english and maths at GCSE and then a 220-260 points (min of 3 c's) from any A-Level subects. So i wud say take the subjects that you enjoy as its 2 very very long years if ya dont!

i have a friend at manchester who does primary school teaching, its a four year course i think. or you could do a degree of your choice then go on to do a Post Graduate Certificate of Education (P.G.C.E) for one year specialising in primary teaching. Music is a popular subject for graduates who then go onto to do a PGCE. do what you enjoy!!!

And four in York, either on our 4 yr. QTS* degree or 3 yr. BA plus 1 yr. PGCE.

There are some 3yr QTS courses but they generally don't offer a specialism - so no music.

My friends going to uni this year to promary education course and she studied English, History, Art and General Studies-I think English is quite important but to get into Universities it all goes on points for example i need 320ucas points from no specified subjects. The points system is confusing but it roughly works out from your final grades; A=120 UCAS Points, B=100 UCAS Points , C=80 UCAS Points etc. The most important thing to consider at A level when picking subjects is to do those that you enjoy otherwise you will find it hard work.

LOL ring edge hill when im older probly and then i can live at home and go to uni! lol that would be funny. ok so wot ive got so far is that i need good gcse results in english maths and science (at least) and need good a level results but theyre not fussy on wot subjects. is that right?

Correct. But if you decide to become a specialist teacher in your subject (ie in charge of music in a school, for instance) then you'd be better off with an A level in that subject.
