I am very surprised at iancwilx's attitude. He sounds like a socialist; politics quite different to those he espoused when I played with him in a failing band in the yorkshire championship section in trhe late 80's.
Ian, capitalism rules. If you can get a nice fat 'retainer' for your hobby then best of british luck to you. I never could, because I was never good enough. iancwilx DID play for 'name' bands in the 60's and DID receive retainers. He wasn't bleading anybody dry, he took the money bacause he could.

By the way, I now play in Australia, and I have never heard the word 'retainer' even mentioned here.

just a quick one but i must say that yes there are players that leave bands when the money dries up but thankfully they are few and far between. At frickley the majority of players travel great distances.we do this because we are proud to play for the band we get no expences mainly because we dont want history to repeat itself.yes money would be great but remember its our choice to play for them.here endeth the lesson.

Who was it that said banding was a Hobby??
Whatever hobby you have in this day and age costs you money.
Being a part of Grimethorpe ect is more than a hobby and if people are willing to pay for players let them do so.
Ive hurd of people being offered money by certain people and they have just turned round and told them rudly to F off but there you go. Cant so anything without money.

Steveo - You have a long and irksome memory !!
Yes, you've called my bluff - my views are still the same as when we used to discuss our plans for World domination over a gallon or two of Tetleys. It's just that I'm bitter(Ha!) that my my fading faculties and talents (Such as the were!!) debar me from my place at the trough !!!
I hear you're on £200 a week playing Solo Didgeridoo for Wagga Wagga Silver.
