Hello Brass Banders

Apologies for no show last week, I was away in The Netherlands. Here is the new show for Sunday 30 July. As always there is something new something old and something to suite all tastes.

Don’t forget the show is always open for requests and for those unanswered questions you may have about the world of brass bands. If your band has a new CD coming out I would be pleased to play a couple of tracks from it and promote the CD and your band’s website. You can always contact me on email: bandstand@chrishelme.org.uk

Lt Col Trevor Sharpe, LVO, OBE died on 22 May 2010. He was born in 1921 and was the Director of Music of the Coldstream Guards (1963-1974) and of The Royal Military School of Music (1974-1978), he remained at Kneller Hall as Professor of Instrumentation. He was appointed Director of Music of the Coldstream Guards in 1963 and remained in post until 1974.

His name will be familiar to millions of television viewers as it appears in the final credits of the ‘Dad’s Army’ TV programme, conducting the Coldstream Guards in the theme tune.

He was one of the adjudicator’s on the BBC TV series ‘Best of Brass’ from 1978 and ended in 1986. He adjudicated at the 1974 British Open and the 1980 National and European Brass Band Championships. After his retirement he lived for many years in the small village of Foy in the Wye Valley.

Listeners will be familiar with some of the many pieces he composed / arranged for brass bands. Enjoy the trombone trio we have on this week's show.
