Hello Brass Banders

I hope you are having a smashing summer. It must be a first for many years with no park engagements cancelled owing to inclement weather.

I well remember in the 1960s being one of the younger members having to fetch the seats for our band and then set them out for our performance in the afternoon. It was a pity that the park staff did not tell us about the almost fresh green paint was still wet between the seat slats. Mum was not best please when we went home with green horizontal lines across our backs.

Another job for the younger members of our band. Carrying the stand box around Blackpool after we appeared at the Blackpool contest. The 'chara' (coach) driver would not open it up until late in the afternoon. Carrying the stand box round for four hours was no joke.

Talking of the Blackpool contest of the 60s. How many can remember making your way to the playing area and having to walk passed the elephant house - what a stink. It was enough to choke you and all just before you were to play.

Looking back now over 50 years they were still good times.

Don't forget the show is always open to requests and questions about the world of brass bands.

In 1977 Florian Klinger was born in Innsbruck, Austria. At the age of eight he got his first trumpet lessons from Hannes Buchegger. From 1993 to 1999 he studied trumpet. In 1996 he won the first prize at the Yamaha Competition in Vienna, in 1997 he received the first prize with the Trompetensextett Tirol at the Brass Competition of Passau Germany.
From 1995 to 2000 he was principal trumpeter in the NDR Symphony Orchestra in Hamburg, switching to the same position in the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra in September 2000.
Since 2005 he has been teaching at the Richard Strauss Konservatorium in Munich. He has been a member of the Austrian Brass Connection and Brass Band Froschl Hall.
Florian is featured on this week's show accompanied by Brass Band Froschl Hall conducted by Hannes Buchegger his first trumpet tutor. He displays playing of the highest level...
