Hello Brass Banders

For many bands it will be summer park engagement time. I well remember the early 1960s and playing in our local park. When it was really hot weather the band secretary gave us permission to play without wearing our band jackets. Mind you those were rare events back then. On those dreamy Sunday afternoons playing to an audience of may be your mum, dad and gran I just wish the park keeper had told us that the traditional green park bandstand seats had been painted that morning. Green stripes across your back did not go down well when you met up with your mother at the interval...... Happy days looking back now some 55 years on.

Even if it was raining on the day of the park concert you still had to turn up. At the designated 3pm time start you still had to be there, and why you may ask? As young members of the band we were always told that the council sent a spy to the park who would be hiding in the bushes somewhere just making sure you did turn up. If you were not there even on those wet days then the band would not get paid. How much did the band get paid in those days: 3pm to 5pm with a half hour interval, then 7pm through until 8.30pm and again with a half hour interval the band received the princely sum of £30. A fortune back then and a real top-up to the band funds.

Yorkshire Imperial Band, also known as Yorkshire Imperial Urquhart Travel Band (from sponsors David Urquhart Travel), and the Yorkshire Imps, is a brass band from West Yorkshire. Other names used have included Yorkshire Imperial Metals Band, IMI Yorkshire Imperial Band and DUT Yorkshire Imperial Band.

Formed in the 1930s as the Yorkshire Copper Works Band based at Yorkshire Copper Works in Leeds, and renamed when Yorkshire Imperial Metals was created in 1958 (Yorkshire Copper Works and ICI Metals Division).
Rothwell Temperance Band (est 1881), when drinkers and non-drinkers at Rothwell Model Band, (est 1841) split into two bands the other being the Rothwell Old Band.

In 1999 as Wallace Arnold (Rothwell) Band, reflecting sponsorship by a local coach operator. The then "B" band retained the name Rothwell Temperance Band and still exists.

2000 Wallace Arnold (Rothwell) Band merged with the Yorkshire Imperial Band and for some time the Yorkshire Imperial DUT (Rothwell) Band.

The band is featured on this week's show with a solo Vale Brilliante from the principal cornet player in 1970 Graham Walker. This illustrates just on of his many top class performances.
