Sellers International Band, conducted by Philip McCann, Listen to the Band, 27 August

Immediately noticeable was the glossy sound given to the band by the BBC production (sounded like artificial reverb.). But it suited the entertaining programme. The band was technically secure, rich and well balanced, showing why they are up there among the best bands in Yorkshire. The two enjoyable soloists were Rebecca Lundberg, trombone with “In the wee small hours of the morning” and Leah Williams in “Evergreen”. Other items included “March from the Jazz Suite No. 2” (Shostakovich arr. Duncan), “Parade of the Tin Soldiers” (Jessel arr. Langford), the exciting “Excerpt from Swan Lake Act 1” (Tchaikovsky arr. Trevor Davis) and epic-sounding music from the film “Ben Hur” (Rozsa arr. J. G. Mortimer).

Very much in contrast was Kenneth Downie’s “In Perfect Peace”, based on a song setting of the scriptural “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee” (Isaiah 26:3). The music is typical of the lush harmonies one expects of Ken Downie and can be appreciated with or without the text reference. The playlist included Cole Porter’s “Be A Clown” but it was chopped off the start of the Internet relay.
