Rather short notice, but Radio 3 is broadcasting highlights from last September's British Open weekend, starting at 1pm, and including the test piece, Maunsell Forts, by John McCabe. I presume it will be available via the web-site for about a week, and there is a further broadcast next Wednesday lunch-time:
13:00 Lunchtime Concert
Brass At Symphony Hall
Petroc Trelawny introduces highlights from last year's brass band festival in Birmingham, which was the occasion of a double celebration - the 150th year of the British Open Championship and the centenary of the brass band legend Harry Mortimer.
This first programme includes the winning performance of the work which all nineteen bands played on contest day. John McCabe's nocturnal sea-scape, inspired by the steel and concrete 'forts' built out in the Thames Estuary as a first line of wartime defence, was commissioned for the occasion by Radio 3.
Percy Fletcher: An Epic Symphony
Fodens Band
Russell Gray (conductor)
John McCabe: The Maunsell Forts (BBC Commission)
Cory Band
Robert Childs (conductor)
Dean Goffin: Rhapsody in Brass
Williams Fairey Band
Allan Withington (conductor)
Elgar (arr Charles Godfrey)
Selection from Caractacus
Grimethorpe Colliery Band
Elgar Howarth (conductor)
