It was on their Twitter yesterday - simply said "...are in full swing in preparation for the The Welsh Open" though they also posted earlier in the month had vacancies for cornet and percussion

Why are there so few bands at this once thriving contest? This used to be a good curtain raiser to the years contesting. Sign of the times perhaps, or has the contest just stood still for too many years with not a great deal if innovation?

I remember the days when Tredegar and Desford entered. The Octagon was packed full. The venue, contest and organisation is still very good indeed. I think it is simply a case that it costs so much to attend a contest and money is tighter. It is also just one month before the areas - it always was but perhaps bands have to allocate money at this time of year to the areas rather than Yeovil. It will be a great day again tomorrow but sad that one or two more heavyweights will not be there. I really hope it revives over the next few years....

Worth remembering that the Area contests have all crept forwards a good few weeks in the last 10 years or so (I can remember playing at Colston Hall on the first weekend of April, for instance) which may have had an impact on those bands who can't risk putting their test pieces together on fewer rehearsals.

Worth noting that 4BR today reports that the Ripon Entertainment contest (aimed, I think, at lower section bands) already has a full book of entries. Admittedly it's not during such a busy time of year, contest-wise - but certainly shows that this kind of contest remains popular across the board.

We supported this contest for many years, and won it twice. However, for us it has always been an expensive trip as we have had to drive across the country on the Friday night. It was felt that this is not cost effective. We wish every success to the bands attending this year, and safe journey to our friends from Friary Guildford Band.

Speaking from a personal perspective, compared with how other entertainment contests are run (and Butlins is a fantastic example of how to run a contest of this ilk), Yeovil always seems such a hassle. It's hard work to persuade the stage to use lights. It's hard work to use a smoke machine (you have to prove it's been PAT tested) or any other electrical effect. It's a hassle to use scenery. There are rules banning the use of instruments that are perfectly acceptable to use in other contests. If you want to do anything other than sit down and play a mini concert then you have to spend lots of energy arguing your case.

The guys who help the percussion teams backstage do a fantastic job but sadly this contest is stuck in the 90's and hasn't modernised.

Great shame - I am old enough to remember the Yeovil of the 80's when the very top bands came and performed on the first day and the second tier on day two. They used to have 25-30 bands entered. This is by far the lowest and weakest entry I have ever seen.
