Still looks like there's good value to be found in the 1st section..... Catterick e/w @ 12/1 is surely worth a punt in such a small field.

Well Penrith and Carlisle haven't entered (although Penrith do hope to enter next year). Most of the cumbrian bands I know don't compete anyway

Cracking Odds, what do I get for a combination tricast ??? or is that toooo hard to work out, failing that my tricast is Catterick Brass Harrogate Westoe in that order,

I reckon that Barton Community band could be something of a dark horse in the 4th. Half of the band were, until recently, playing for their senior band (Barton Town) in the top section (so I'm told ;)) as was the MD.

Contrary to the opinion of the undoubted experts at 4br, if I were you, I would slip a crafty few quid on Shepherd Group in the 1st Section, and South Milford in the 2nd Section . ( Said he knowingly tapping the first finger of his right hand on the side of his nose !!!)

wow.....so few bands......!
I've always known that the North of England was one of the smaller areas, but hadn't actually realised how small. So this is a serious question. With only 5 bands in the 1st Section, do 2 still get promoted and 2 relegated? I presume 2 will qualify - those are the National rules aren't they? But what if one of the bands who qualifies but hasn't been promoted wins at the Nationals? Does that mean only 4 1st Section bands in the North of England next year? And I am being serious here, so please no nasty replies. Just curious as to how it works.

With such a small section it's 1 up 1 down, 2 qualify for the finals. It might be the smallest section but it's the most competitive, any band could win it on the day especially with Mountain Views as the test piece. With the point being so tight going into the contest we could see 2 go up anyway, for example if it finished Shepherd's, Westoe then Harrogate all 3 bands would be tied on 8 points. There are actually 7 bands in the 1st section but Dearham and Flookburgh haven't entered, effectively relegating Flookburgh. I don't know what they'd do if 2 or 3 bands were promoted but I'd assume they'd attempt to make up the numbers from 2nd section.

Thanks for the sensible reply. I was just wondering about the numbers of promotions/relegations. I wasn't sure if 2 qualify/2 up/2 down was an actual Kapitol rule, unless the Area committee got involved in exceptional circumstances - and after babysitting a number of our band's "children" tonight my brain wouldn't even know where to look for the rules! I hadn't realised that 2 had withdrawn, so the 5 seemed really small in comparison with the other sections.

"In sections where there are ten bands or less on the grading register, only the band or bands with the best aggregate placings over the last three years will be promoted."

"In respect of sections 1 – 4, qualification for an invitation will depend on the number of bands entered in the sections at the Regional Championships.
Up to 16 bands entered ……………………………….. 2 bands qualify
17 to 24 bands entered ……………………………….. 3 bands qualify
25 bands and over entered ……………………………. 4 bands qualify"

Assume it's up to said area committee as to whether it's 1 or 2 bands go up in a smaller section, in this case it's just 1.

All the rules can be found here http://www.kapitol.co.uk/index.php?id=5
