Would have thought Unite would have been favourites after they won Yorkshire area? So pleased to see them and the Imps back into the champ section xxxxx

Surprised Chalford are not favourites, after all our bass section won best lower band bass section prize in the Paddy Flower Awards..........

Now there is a thing. So are you also inferring that if a band has beaten Unite the Union this year, that they should be favourites?

It's only a bit of fun, so if you think that Unite are gong to win, get some paddy pounds on them now.

Seems to be rather a lot of bass players posting in this thread. Are we the only ones reading this? Interesting to see the bands were up against later this year, quite a few who underestimated us at Leicester over the last few years. All very good bands, that's why they're at the finals, on the day it will be down to what the guys in the box want and we hardly ever agree with that do we?

I wouldn't put it past Becontree to pull something special out of the bag based on this years performances! ;)

I certainly have my top 5 sorted, though not in any order yet.. Unite, Imps, Becontree, Shepherds and Rainford

I believe Paddy's predictions are based on his ranking system, so quite rightly one contest shouldn't override the recent history. And Imps have had a couple more contests under their belt to shift them up in the rankings. Although Imps and Unite have been 1 place apart in every contest for quite some time now (just swapping round in order each time) so in reality it'll probably be a close run thing (and that's only taking the Yorkshire contingency into account!) Should be a good contest

I think the choice of test-piece itself will play a big part in it.

Cheers Mic.

Hope not though, as I want to plat at Butlin's in January, so second would be good

Please please please let them select something challenging to play rather than an ageing concert overture or a second section stroll - going from Mountain Views to On The Shoulders of Giants puts things into perspective as to what a band with top section aspirations should be capable of playing!

Absolutely Andy, looking back over the 1st Section National Finals pieces for the last decade, they haven't exactly been what you'd call a stepping stone to Championship Section life (regardless of whether they're good pieces or not)!! Choose right and you make sure the the champions have got what it takes to battle the big boys.

Let's hope this year they finally realise what they're doing wrong with 1st section test piece selection (Although as nice as Mountain Views is - and obviously all test pieces have their own challenges - it doesn't give me much hope that they will).

Please post in the correct thread, as you are giving us bass players a bad name
I`m quite sure i`m in the right thread, I did go to band and check though, yep after checking the banner given to us saying 1st section 2nd place. Unless the 1st section piece was cross patonce and no one told us........Ahhhh, I may know why, I play for Chalford in the 1st section, there is a Chalgrove in the 2nd!!!.

Humble apologies, I completely misread your band's name. Please forgive my erroneous previous posts. Next time I will pay more attention

The choice of piece will be very interesting indeed... do they normally try and contrast the piece to the areas?
Think after Mountain Views they need to get some technical stuff in there to really find out the bands capable of stepping up to Champ. -though can't help but think it's a little harsh for bands to qualify on a piece like this, then be given a test-piece significantly harder? What's the norm standard wise?

Not a problem, easily done, looking foward to playing against all these bands i`ve never come up against, I have to say, after last year when Aldbourne and Bournemouth did the 1-2 for the WoE, Brunel and Chalford have a big ask to keep the results going for our area, though we are quietly confident.......As are all the bands, should be a cracking contest.
