I've just heard the terribly sad news that my old colleague from Newtongrange band Nigel Wight has passed away this afternoon at the tragically young age of 43.
Nigel was bass trombonist in a section along with myself on 1st, and Colin Ormiston on 2nd, during the unforgettable period in the early 90's, when, as Scottish Brewers, Nitten band swept all before them on the contest stage, including the amazing 4th place at the RAH in 1991. Part of the reason for all that success was the sheer fun we all had playing together, and the trombone section was especially great to play in.
It wasn't all contest success either; we played great concerts and broadcasts etc., and Nigel was such an integral part - indeed, many will remember him as Bar Manager at the Band Hall Social Club, when that particular aspect of the band was at its peak. Nigel also played with Dalkeith Burgh Band during their very sucessful time under John Dickson in the late 80's.
He did move down south, Preston, I think, and I haven't heard of him for years, but he was a good friend, successfully helping, as an accountant, me, to fill my chaotic tax forms, and unsuccessfully trying to teach me how to play golf! We heard last month from Tommy Campbell of Dalkeith and Monktonhall band that he was, unbelieveably, terminally ill, and this afternoon, we heard the awful news from my mother-in-law, who is friends with his Aunt.
43 is too young, and our thoughts go to his family this evening. Still hard to take in, really.
