Nigel Wight

I've just heard the terribly sad news that my old colleague from Newtongrange band Nigel Wight has passed away this afternoon at the tragically young age of 43.

Nigel was bass trombonist in a section along with myself on 1st, and Colin Ormiston on 2nd, during the unforgettable period in the early 90's, when, as Scottish Brewers, Nitten band swept all before them on the contest stage, including the amazing 4th place at the RAH in 1991. Part of the reason for all that success was the sheer fun we all had playing together, and the trombone section was especially great to play in.

It wasn't all contest success either; we played great concerts and broadcasts etc., and Nigel was such an integral part - indeed, many will remember him as Bar Manager at the Band Hall Social Club, when that particular aspect of the band was at its peak. Nigel also played with Dalkeith Burgh Band during their very sucessful time under John Dickson in the late 80's.

He did move down south, Preston, I think, and I haven't heard of him for years, but he was a good friend, successfully helping, as an accountant, me, to fill my chaotic tax forms, and unsuccessfully trying to teach me how to play golf! We heard last month from Tommy Campbell of Dalkeith and Monktonhall band that he was, unbelieveably, terminally ill, and this afternoon, we heard the awful news from my mother-in-law, who is friends with his Aunt.

43 is too young, and our thoughts go to his family this evening. Still hard to take in, really.

Sad news indeed, Alan.

I knew Nigel from his years with Dalkeith Burgh (my old band), and I admired his enthusiasm and determination.

My thoughts are with his family at this sad time.

A very sad loss. Nigel was one of the nicest people I've ever met. I knew him from a football club we both played for in Preston (Vernon's Veteran Football Club), and as we were both non-Prestonian in origin we hit an instant rapport. A really easy going chap - I don't think I ever saw him lose his temper and I never heard him say a bad word about anyone. He often mentioned his time in the bands he used to play for and he spoke of those times with great affection. I saw him on the Wednesday before he died and, despite his obvious discomfort and pain, he still had time for a laugh and a joke. A truly great bloke. My thought go out to his wife, Jackie, and his two boys, Frasier and Cameron.

Heard the news this morning, very sad news. When I first joined Newtongrange in 1991 Nigel was one of the many band members who opened their doors to me and let me stay over when we were out socialising/contesting and helped make my time at Nitten band as one of the great times in my life.

RIP Nige

Just wondering if there is any news on funeral arrangements? If anyone hears anything could you post the details.

Thanks Pete,

Just heard that it's on Friday 2nd May at 11am.

I worked with Nigel for the last 12 months and he was a great guy.

As a fellow brass player we had many a laugh abount his banding career and especially his trips to the National Finals in London.

He will be greatly missed by his work friends as well as the many friends he had in the brass band movement.

Our thoughts are with Jackie, Fraiser, Cameron and all his family at this sad time.

The church is Newton Parish Church, Newton church Road, Danderhall (although it is nearer to Newton Village).

For those who don't know how to get to the church for the funeral, get to Sherrifhall roundabout from either the edinburgh city bypass (A720) or the A68 or A7. Take the exit marked Edinburgh City Centre and Danderhall with the sign for the hospital, pass the new park and ride at north sherrifhall, Danderhall is further along on the right.

Turn right into Danderhall at the traffic lights (the village is only on the right hand side of the road). Follow the main street along past the shops on the left (community centre and library on left) until you get to the mini roundabout (health centre immediately ahead). Take the 2nd exit (or right fork) down the hill. You will see the church further down the hill on the right. Can't really miss it because it is surrounded by fields and the cemetary is immediately next door.

Hope these instructions help as I'm trying to use road numbers and landmarks so that they're easier to understand??

If ur using Sat Nav then put in the postcode EH22 1LY.

Hope this will help anyone who is travelling and doesn't know the area.

Yes, Nigel was a good friend. Played numerous rounds of golf and enjoyed many happy times with Nigel. I actually introduced him to Jackie. Back in 1993 I played trumpet in the production of Les Mis at the Playhouse in Edinburgh, as did Jackie, and used to drag Nigel in for the odd after show drink or two. He met Jackie and before very long they moved in together.

I'm just back from the funeral, such a good attendance, the sun was shining and the band sounded splendid. A fitting tribute to such a nice guy.

My condolences to Jackie and family.

RIP Nigel.

Was a great send off for a great man. The Attendance showed how many people's lives Nigel had enriched in such a tragicly short life.

Just wanted to say a heartfelt thank you to all the brass banders out there who have posted such kind comments. It is a comfort for me and the boys.

It all feels a little surreal at the moment but one of the lasting impressions of yesterday was a wonderful sounding brass tribute to Nige.

John, thanks for your comments and those days seem a long time ago now, but very happy memories. It was great to see you yesterday and Alec, sorry I didn't get the opportunity for a word but lovely to see you there, also.

For those guys ( and girls ) I didn't have the chance to speak to, thanks very much for giving of your time. Many people commented to me how wonderful and poignant the music was.

Pete...what can I say...cheers for being there and I'll give you a bell soon.

Good Wishes to you all
Jackie, Fraser and Cameron.

Last night (10 Jan 2010) , I learned about Nigel's passing. I am still in a state of deep shock. I've known Nigel from the age of about 5 ( I was in his primary school class). I had met up with him back in the early 2000s for a class re-union and was trying to get in contact with him again last night to catch up.
He was a very popular lad at school, quiet , intelligent and musically gifted. We started violin lessons at the same time.
I kind of lost contact with him at high school ( although he was in my class at physics), but he never passed you by, always had time to say hello.
I am sure that I speak on behalf of his former Danderhall primary classmates when I say that he was a gentleman, one of life's "good guys" and he will be sorely missed by those who knew him.

Rest in peace Nige,

Colin Baxter
