Durham miners gala

i have been told a bit of disturbing news and was wondering if anyone else had heard this either from thier banner village or the council, but ive been told that there has been a new road traffic law that means we cant march in our village as we normally would before going on to durham or if we do the police wont close down the road like they normally would.
can anyone give me an insight or tell me something about this?
Thanks

The Police are not obliged to close off any road for any parade etc.

It is not their responsibility to provide any excorts. If you request that they do provide you with escorts you may be recharged for this service.

The only way to clear this up is to ask you local police what their policy is as it does vary from one police force to another.

we were told this a few years ago. When we checked with the Police they said it was fine for us to march through the village. They wouldn't close the road for us or provide an escort and we had to have marshalls wearing the high visability jackets. I would advise you to contact Redhills (the NUM headquarters in Durham). They were very helpful to us when we had this situation

Which Banner are you taking in? - I guess its Backworth. I've just put a nearly complete list of all the bands and banners on the westoeband web site.

Westoe Band are leading a new Westoe Lodge Banner this year and have had a few events to show the banner already. As part of the project I'm trying to compile a complete list of the Bands and Banners attending the 2009 Gala. So far I've got over 30 listed on www.westoeband.co.uk. If you have any corrections or additions let me know.

let me know the name of Band and Banner you're leading in. If its your first trip to Gala you're in for a treat (especially if it rains)

Your right . As one of the last deep mines left in Britain we will be there with the Maltby Colliery NUM Banner. If you see us come and say hi . I wil proudly be holding the banner.

I've got Broughtons down for the NUM Durham Area Banner - I've heard there is a new Banner for South Hetton, so are Broughtons taking in two banners?

Marsden will be there, and apparently we have had a similar issue in regard to marching in our village prior to going to Durham.
And having seen the latest weather forecast, it looks like Whit Friday all over again...oh joy.

I just hope they are wrong again, cause its one of the best do's of the year.

Thanks for letting me know Marsden will be there, I've got you on the list as taking in Herrington Banner. Is that right?
Also do you know of any bands coming down from Scotland ?

Spot on mate, we take New Herrington's Banner.
No idea of bands coming from Scotland I'm afraid. I seem to remember of banner having a band of Bagpipers last year, so Scotland would appear to be represented somewhere, not sure by who though!
