Marches.....faves and recyclables.

I had a search before bringing this up and could not find a match.

In my day, I've played with a couple of bands, and played a few marches. I also know that sometimes the good ones get over played, and we can't have them being worn out, now can we?

So I want to ask a couple of questions.

1) What is your favourite march (street or concert) to play??
2) What is the greatest march of all time to play or listen to?
3) Which marches would you be happy to see destroyed from all band libraries?

1) Ravenswood is probably my favourite street march and the "March from Symphonic Metamorphisis on themes by Webber, Hindemithe" is probably my favourite stage (and orchestral) march.
2) Either of the 2 above!
3) Whichever march I was playing at the time on parade!

Favourite march to play: Slaidburn or Death or Glory for marching. Waltonian as a concert march.
Listening: March of the Cobblers or Florentiner
Worst Marches: The Middy (The bass part is awful)

A couple of favorites

Favorite Brass Band March: Montreal Citadel (Audoire)

Favorite Wind Band March: Florentiner (Fucik)
Another good one: Nobles of the Mystic Shrine (Sousa)

Favorite Orchestral March: Rakoszy March (Berlioz)
Another march-like orchestral work: "Revelge" (Mahler)

1) Mephistopheles is my fave march of all time.
With my old band we played Home Again, Loyal and True, Imperial Echoes and The Middy every march for 10 years so they hold a special place in my heart (even though they are not the best of marches).

2) To play I think Ravenswood and the President are good.

3) Ones to be destroyed are Slaidburn and Punchinello (sorry).

Errrrr...don't know. We do a cracking Colonel Bogey here at Staffs.

Slaidburn. And burning would be most appropriate. Does Great British Marches count too? Hate that too!

1) Fave to play; Serious/ceremonial street, 'Glorious Victory'

Light/carnival street, 'Hyde park'(Navy Day) 'Royal Standard' close 2nd.

2) Yes, the greatest of all time has got to be 'Mephi'

3) When we used to run out of loo paper at my old band I always regreted that our parts of 'Sempre Fidelis' were glued on card!!....at least it could have met a useful end (pun intended!) Come to think of it, ALL that Sousa rubbish should go.

2) Again, a close call between Mephi and Celebration (Condon)
3) No question: Death or Glory

We're currently investigiating (my term - looking at and considering for long term rehearsal) sempre fidelis. I don't mind a bit of Sousa, but I don't think it's the same from a brass band POV.

star lake has just been suggested to me. Gympie Salvo coprs have loaned us their setting, but they are short of sop, 1 bari, and flugel parts. It looks nice. Montreal Citadel is a tad beyond us atm, but italso looks impressive.

Fave to Listen to - French Military (brass or orch) and Cross of Honour
Let's Burn - any aussie tunes turned into marches. Waltzing Matilda and Gundagai for a start.

2)Best march ever to play ( or had the most fun playing anyway) Praise! :shock: :lol: and Cossacks got a decent horn part
3) The contestor! :x Didn't like Mephistopheles at first, but its growing on me.

MMMM..Good qustion because I have a few but here are mine anyway!

1.Mehistopheles..It's a cracker and lives up to it's title(Servant of the devil I think?)

2.Shield of Liberty J.J.Richards/Derek Broadbent..It's a typical American circus march! Need Quick fingers and bionic arm

3.Slaidburn..Sorry but I just can't get away with it!!

Greatest March: Dunno quite a lot of good ones but something like Knight Templar, Viva Rimmer is quite good too.

Should be burnt: Any roadmarch that is always played, Slaidburn, The Middy, Standard of St George...you get the picture!

Burn: None of them... as a composer I can appreciate how much time and effort to compose one is spent... I would only burn my own because I know I can't compose better than the marches already out there being played.
