Hi, I live in the oxford area and play the tenor horn (currently not with any band) I'm looking to have some lessons, does anyone know of any good tutors in the area..............or somewhere within reasonable travelling distance? :?

try looking for a good trumpet or euphonium tutor in your area if you cant find a T-Horn one..
Same advice whatever the instrument.. only real difference is that they wouldnt know much reportoire

Go to your local library. They always have lists of music teachers in your area... dunno about teavhers though

Yeh, Libraries are always a good bet. If not find a local band, there's bound to be some teacher's in them.

thanks guys.............not many teachers attached to local bands and library was a bit hopeless but i'll keep looking guess i'll have to do some travelling.......................be an excuse to have a drink with a few people.....Helen! :lol:

They have a list of teachers on there by area.

Can't see a brass teacher in Oxford, but you can search other local areas on there.

Another tip, try phoning the pianists....see who they know... sometimes due to exam silibus a brass teracher will call upon an accomplished pianist - usually a friend - and maybe even a teacher friend!

Just the one drink? Surely you mean several! :wink:

... or even look in your local Music shop.... there's usually a notice board when business cards or leaflets are displayed. Maybe the shop owner will also know of specific tutors in your area.

Another good source of information is a school Music teacher. They will be being asked all the time by their pupils of where to find tutors etc...

he he if i go to my local music shop to find a teacher or the schools i get the contact for my boyfriend!!!!!..........he can't teach me it just dosen't work....i'll keep looking. Thanks for all the ideas.

Hi there Liv; it's some time now since we were both playing at Wantage - must be 6 or 7 years? It's a pretty sparse area for good teachers round here, true enough; in fact, I can't think of any specialist Horns at all. One name that comes highly recommended by others - although I've not met him - is Bob Cutting, who's a Trumpeter. Eileen Sykes at Wantage will have his contact details; I think he lives in Abingdon. Oh, perhaps there is a Tenor Horn specialist - Fiona Parker is certainly a good French Horn player and teacher, and I think also does Eb Tenor. Worth a try maybe - if you're interested, I can get her number. I used to get Euph lessons from John Winterflood in Swindon; we always got along okay. His number is 01793 421511, iirc.

Bandless? Kidlington is a nice friendly group - albeit with two very sound Horn players already... I think we've just taken delivery of a 2nd Horn as well... Oh well.

Yes bandless at the mo sick an tired of the ways things were at city!!!!!! Now i'm nursing full time i also find it difficult to commit to a band fully but enjoy helping bands out.............less demanding!!

I know fiona.....no disrespect to her but i really need an experienced brass band player to take me that bit further i think...............to be honest i don't think john winterflood would be that good for me either but i'll look into the other contact..thanks for the ideas.

will see u about i'm sure..............just not at the areas i doubt??

Next contest up we're doing 'The New Jerusalem' at Leamington. I think City are going too; not sure if that's a positive or a negative inducement though... Shall certainly be at the Areas - something decent in the Bass Trombone part at last!

Yeah i'm helping city out at leamington they are playing land of the long white cloud and phil harper is conducting them....haven't made it to a rehearsal yet but should be ok..will most likely see u there............not the areas tho not doing that with them.
