Is it all nonsense??

After discussing this with a few of my fellow band members tonight, i was just wondering if the information presented in tMP rehearsal room was useful to players?
For example, the whole issue on triple tounging, there was so much information given by other banding members it was quite hard to take in. It was nice to know what each individual player found worked for them but should this sort of information be left to individuals to sort out between teachers who should know what approaches suit them?

No offence intended to anyone, just want to know opinions and if any one followed adviced given on the site, and if so did it work for them?

In general or about triple tonguing? Sometimes yes, sometimes no!

At the end of the day the site contains peoples personal opinions and not quantifiable fact, or a guarantee the person actually knows what they are talking about! Hell of a lot of waffle, and self promotion sometimes, but other times very friendly and useful advice given by some very nice people!

Posts regarding beginners, some instruments etc have helpful! But I think most of all I think is a forum where people with the same interest meet and talk, rather than an Encyclopedia of Brass Bands!

I think this is a very valid point to make. As someone who has studied with most of the top players in London I can say that there are generally accepted ways of doing things. There are different appraoches but the basic principles are the same.

I do find that some of the views expressed here do miss that mark. I myself am experienced enough to know which to take on board and which to ignore, however others will not have the benefit of this standpoint. It must be hard for beginners to know which points to take on board and which to ignore.

tMP must remain a place where everyone can air thier views, there may howver also be room for a 'masterclass' type area where the experienced members/panel only can post information - much in the same way as the Copyright info was put together.

I thought the point of posting a question to a forum like this was that a number of different approaches and solutions would be offered? There frequently is no single solution that applies in cases (except practice more ).

As with any forum, there are a wide range of people here with differing levels of knowledge and experience, the problem is sorting them out.

If anyone posts anything that could be seriously detrimental to your playing, usually it will swiftly be challenged by some of the more experienced teachers here (such as Straightmute), leaving you with choice (free will?)

Excellent idea!! A good way to harness some of the best teachers knowledge. Might also help to flush some of the talented 'lurkers' out of hiding and into full view. :shock:

This is exactly what I was trying to get at. There are players out there that know which information to take on and ignore, but its not as easy for for people with less experience.

Its good to see that everyone express thier personal opinions, but i do like the idea of a 'masterclass' area. Maybe it would add a bit of weight to some answers about playing techniques.

On the issue of triple-tongueing I read what people had written, but being as I have an established method of triple-tongueing I was content in doing just that and not taking anything onboard.

On other issues it's difficult I admit, there are many opinions wide and varied, but using methods which are taught only by yo-ur teacher can pose a risk because it is coming from one person and one person only, telling you exactly how to do it. Would you rather get advice on a particular aspect of playing frm a good player who specialises in that area, or an excellent player who is good/average across the board on all aspects of playing, but not really a specialist?

I think, in view of the type of forum this is, If you don't want a wide and varied input then keep the question to yourself, or PM a specific person regarding their expertise!!!

But surely (cliche alert) Two heard are better than one!!!!!!!

While sometimes I might disagree over something slight that may have been suggested, I always take note. As a teacher, I need to constantly keep my "bag of tricks" full, so that when a student is having trouble, I suggest another way.

A recent topic on soprano cornets, allowed me to ask a question over something they were discussing. Not being a "proper" sop player, I took their advice, and went straight to the bandhall, and pulled out the spare sop to test it. I did notice a change in the right direction, but by gosh it was hard work!!

So, I say keep your eyes open, even if you disagree or have your own "tried and true" method. Maybe you'll find another angle to explore...

Some posts that are not important to you may be important/ useful to someone else. If they don't interest you, don't read them.

All forum based sites suffer from this problem. I guess the trick is to read through the threads looking for those who appear to know what they're talking about then apportion more weight to their suggestions in subsequent "serious" threads. It doesn't take very long to learn how to sort the wheat from the chaff and sometimes you'll find that the chaff makes for an amusing read anyway

There are also people who have studied with top players who aren't necessarily in a position to say what's definitely right and wrong (I don't refer to you specifically Mike, as I don't know you, but we should be careful here. I do know some people who fall into that category!) The whole point of people coming here and asking for advice is to glean snippets of experience. What might appear 'wide of the mark' and 'pants' to some might well prove some use for others, even if there are some generally accepted 'dos and donts'.

Masterclass might be a good idea, but really, it'd only really work coming from conductors and players who really have been there, seen it, done it and bought the tshirt (say, for instance, Messrs. Webster, Childs - senior and junior - , Parkes, Snell etc. etc.). To be honest, it was a bit of a silly topic to start with (no offence intended, just an observation), but still, if it's nonsense to some, don't take any notice of them. Simple.

There is no guarantee that your going to get a useful reply (especially after a few pints! :lol: :guiness ) but other people's experiences may help you in some way. I think for the most part players know by instinct what will be useful advice and what is not, but there can be a problem when an inexperienced player takes up bad advice. So there is a place for a "masterclass" section (good idea Mike :tup ) where people who need good advice - and not just a chinwag - can get it! However this throws up the problem of how do you pick the panel?!

Regarding unimportant posts: Isn't this supposed to be a DISCUSSION forum? "The views of others might not reflect those of your own" :wink:

Are you implying that there are some people who come home from the pub after a few pints and proceed to contribute unhelpful posts to this forum? I'm afraid I resemble that remark! :wink:
