David King gives up conducting!

Don't panic - it's only for the weekend as he takes up the cornet once more to play with Leyland.

The Leyland Band under the baton of Garry Cutt has pulled off the scoop of the 2004 Regional Championships it seems with the news that Professor David King no less, has been signed by them to play 3rd man down on the solo cornet bench for the contest.

It will mean that the multi title winning conductor will dust off his cornet and perform on the contest stage for the first time, we believe for well over a decade. We think the last time may have been back in the late 1980's when he was playing solo cornet with Black Dyke.

He is no stranger of course to putting in winning performances with the cornet on his lips as he was North of England Solo Champion for three consecutive years - 1983 - 1985 and went on to win the British Open Solo Championships for Bb Cornet for five consecutive years.

He played with Black Dyke after first coming to the country as Principal Cornet of the Hawthorn Band of Australia when they played at the British Open in 1982. At Dyke he was initially offered a second cornet place by Phillip McCann, but eventually came to be his "bumper up" - playing next to him as the Dyke of 1985 did the "Grand Slam".

Gary Westwood of Leyland was obvioulsy delighted with the news that the YBS MD was to take up a place on the solo cornet bench. "We are going through a bit of a reorganisation at the moment as Garry Cutt develops the band as he wants, so we were a place short for the contest. David King offered to help, and we were thrilled that he is able to play as a one off with us here. By all accounts his lip is in fine shape, and it has given the band a great boost to have him with us."

It should make for a full hall for Leyland at the contest - not just to hear them challenge for the North West title, but also to see the great man once more join the ranks of the players.

Wow, impressive. So are you planning on recruiting Philip McCann and Roger Webster for the 2nd Cornet and Jimmy Shepherd for Rep? :p

Anyway, it almost makes me consider seeing the NW areas now :)

We'd never be allowed to do that. Conductors have to be members fo their bands, and you can't be a member of two bands in the same state.
