In “From The Bandroom” this month we’ve braved a trip over the Pennines to visit one of the country’s oldest, and most famous brass bands, Besses o' th’ Barn.
Established in 1818, the band moved into its present bandroom in the 1880’s. The band has had both Anrdre Previn and Sir Simon Rattle as vice presidents, and the list of former MDs reads like a who’s who of the brass band world, including Derek Broadbent, Paul Hindmarsh, Steve Sykes and Roy Newsome.
The musical director since 2017 has been the well known adjudicator and former principal cornet at Wingates Band, Trevor Halliwell.
Just for fun, see if you can identify these short extracts from the programme. Comment below if you know what they are, and please, no spoilers from the band!
Join us at one of the oldest bandrooms in the world, to hear one of the longest established brass bands.
From The Bandroom with the Besses o’ the’ Barn Band, 10pm, Tuesday 28th January on East Leeds FM.
