Denton appoint new MD

Denton Brass announce the appointment of Mr Graham Smith as their Musical Director.

Graham takes over the reigns on Monday 5th January from Mr Johnathan P. Davies who was with the band for two years.

The band are very pleased to have secured Grahams services at this time.

Graham started his musical career playing with Blackpool Town Band in the 1970’s before moving to Poulton-Le-Fylde . Graham played many instruments including Cornet and Tenor Horn but was most happy playing Soprano Cornet.

Whilst at Trent University Graham played for the Championship band Blidworth Colliery. It was also at this time that he got the conducting bug, taking charge of the college string orchestra, various brass ensembles, the college concert and dance bands.

Graham moved to Manchester in 1983 to do a teacher training course and played for Trafford Band, then in 1985 he became MD to Moston and Beswick Band enjoying success in the 4th 3rd and 2nd sections, including visits to the National Finals in London.
In Future years he also had successes with both Eccles Borough Band and Blackley Band, with more visits to National Finals.

Graham then took a break from banding to concentrate on his teaching career.

Graham now feels that the time is right to take on another challenge in banding and is looking forward to developing the musicality of Denton Brass, resulting in excellent concerts and prizes at both local and National contests.

Paul Keogh Chairman of Denton Brass said that this is a truly exciting time for the band, with such an experienced man at the front of the band as it enters it’s 150th year the band are looking forward to many good and satisfying performances both at concerts and contests.
