Chapped, broken lips

I suffer from this really badly, even in the summer :( , but especially at this time of year. Normally it's just a case of drinking plenty of water and piling on the lipsyl, vaseline and the like.

But has anyone got any better suggestions, a secret recipe of grandmother's or a product they swear by...?

Blisteze to treat it - it stings a bit but works a treat.

Blistex (the stuff in the little tub) to use as a preventative. It's the best lip balm I've ever used. I keep one in my gig bag so that I always have it to hand. Use it morning and night to keep your lips luscious!

well i dont know how to stop it, but just keep applying vaseline or whatever you use through the day. And before you play, warm your mouthpiece up in your mouth so that when you put you lips on it, it isnt cold. Unless you play the drums of course. I rememeber my lips after CiN i was terrible!

Yeh, pretty much mirror what Jo says.
Keep applying Lipsyl (i find the Nivea lip care brand is especially good) and vaseline throughout the day, before you go outside in the cold etc.

I very rarely suffer from chapped lips by doing this, unless (again like Jo says!) you happen to be mad enough to play for 6 hours in the freezing cold in Birmingham in Winter

Cheers for the advice guys. It seems to just be telling me what I'm already doing is right :D .

Though I do feel like a bit of a prat sitting in the common room plastering on vaseline/lipsyl etc. Especially when my mate Lisa is usually putting on make-up next to me

If you're getting chapped even in the summer, you may be chronically dehydrated. Topical ointments will only help for a few hours at most. You mentioned plenty of water, which is a good start. Also avoid coffee, colas, or other caffeine - it's a diuretic and will contribute to dryness.

Well you see thats where I think the problem lies.

Due to a medical condition with my stomach, I'm on loads of tablets all which can cause dehydration, and I don't eat very often, so I drink loads of water. I think it's just something I'm gonna be prone to for the foreseeable future, maybe I should see what my specialist says when I next see him???

How many threads have you recommended this Snowfire Tablet on? I think you should be on a commission for this. Or could we contact the manufacturers and ask if they want to sponsor tMP and they could have a banner at the top. Or maybe we should just have a "sticky" for advice on "lip care".

The Blistex relief cream (new name for blisteze- the one in a tube!) is great and i use it for when my lips are chapped and sore. It tingles and really soothes them. I put it on before i go to bed and so overnight it works on healing them.
As a preventative i drink plenty of water (you can't beat it!!) and i also use the blistex Daily conditioner ( in a little tub) keeps my lips nice and soft and moist every day.
I found that Vaseline was really bad for my lips!!! It seems to really dehydrate my lips making them flakey and raw!! So i won't use vaseline anymore. Maybe it's just me that vaseline does this to but it might be affecting your lips too. Try just using the blistex range and see if it helps.

I use lip balm all the time after playing to make sure my lips dont dry out. I was told when I was younger not to use vaseline so I use lypsyl and when they are really bad (usually when I'm practising for a contest) I use blistex and then lip balm.

I never got on with Blistex or Lipsyl. I'm a Chapstick man myself, though I did use Blisteez (I think it was called that, came in a little white tube) but it was REALLY hard to get hold of and then Tescos stopped doing it and I couldn't get it anywhere, but that was the best stuff.

Picked some stuff Sue had on her bedside table called 'Virgin Vie' from Switzerland, it's a miracle cure ! Though I think it's expensive ?

Yeah it's now called Blistex relief cream. I know that wilkos sell it but not sure of any other places. And it's only £1.99 in wilkos- bargin coz it lasts for ages!!! It is the best stuff for sore lips!

Amazingly I was going to post this exact topic tonight - I have the same problem (and just a week to the areas  )

I have really badly chapped lips at the mo'. I've been gobbing loads of Blisteze / Blistex (why do they change brand names?) on them. But I find I can't use it if I'm playing within a few hours of applying it - it feels like I've already done several hours playing and have no stamina or control (well less than usual anyway). This is not good when we have loads of rehersals this week!

Do any of you know any other "magic" remedies to releve this?

Do any of you have the same problem or am I just a freak?

I suffer with quite dry and sore lips. but i jus normally use Vaseline. Theres another one that loadsa my m8s use called Carmex and that helps them but i think that its rather expensive tho. Around £3/£4 and its onliy in a small tub. You know what they say 'Good things come in small packages!'

Blisteze and Blistex are made by the same company. Blisteze is a remedy for chapped lips and Blistex is a lip balm type thing. The Blistex in a tub is the best stuff I have ever ever ever used. I only use a little in the morning and a little at night and also if my lips feel dry a little more, but I don't put it on just before playing. Maybe that's what will work for you - everyone's different.

Good luck next week!

Kirsty (2 weeks to go for us)
