Celebration time at Tewkesbury Town Band

Please find below an announcement from Tewkesbury Town Band regarding the marriage of two of its members and details of its 30th Anniversary events (the first of which are taking place this weekend). 4barsrest wish to charge us to include the details of our free concert tour of Tewkesbury and its surroundings, and to include details of our other anniversary events. Hopefully, we will not be billed by Themouthpiece.com for posting this notice.

The year 2004 sees Tewkesbury Town Band in the mood for a party.

On 24 April the Band helped two of its members, Hadrian Walters (first trombone) and Helen Morgan (assistant principal cornet), celebrate their marriage in style. The Band provided the music for the wedding ceremony at Bishop’s Cleeve church. The Band was joined by the bride and groom at the wedding reception in the Officers Mess at RAF Innsworth where it provided a short concert of light music for their family and friends.

The bride entered to Peter Graham’s wonderful fanfare featuring the cornets and trombones, “Summon the Dragon”; the title of this piece also allowing for numerous jokes to be made regarding the future life of the groom! The groom had to make a hasty dash from his seat in the band to the altar after playing the opening intrada to this piece. The band had entertained the gathering congregation with a selection of music including “Highland Cathedral”, “Swedish Folk Song” and “Gabriel’s Oboe”. Whilst the register was being signed the Band played the descriptive pieces “Silver Mountain” and “In Perfect Peace”. The bride and groom walked out to the joyful “Rondo Romantica” by Otto Schwarz.

This year the Band is also celebrating the 30th Anniversary of its re-formation in 1974. Several major events to mark this milestone have already been planned and put into motion.

This weekend, 29th to 31st May, sees the Band take its music on the road with its “Music on the Move” tour of Tewkesbury and its surroundings. The Band will be providing free 30 minute concerts at several locations in and around Tewkesbury, one minute of music for each year the Band has been in existence. Our full itinerary is shown below and any player who wishes to join us on our celebration tour is welcome.

The grand finale to the tour being the Band’s appearances at the Tewkesbury Abbey fete on Monday 31st May at 12:35hrs and 15:00hrs. We hope to see all our friends and loyal supporters during the weekend, as well as hopefully generate some new interest in the Band.

This tour will also see the premiere of our very own march “Tewkesbury” by the well known brass composer/arranger Andrew Duncan. This march was especially commissioned to mark our 30th Anniversary, and was paid for by a grant from the Summerfield Charitable Trust, to whom we express our grateful thanks.

The march has a military feel to reflect the history of the town of Tewkesbury, and the current band's link with the army through its practice room on Ashchurch army camp; as well as including some more reflective moments depicting the beautiful abbey that we have here in Tewkesbury. The Band as a whole are thrilled to have a piece of their own and hope that those who hear it at the weekend, and for years to come, enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoy playing it. The Band would like to thank Andy Duncan for creating such a fantastic piece of music that the Band and the town of Tewkesbury can be proud of.

Also planned for the 30th Anniversary is a Concert at the Roses Theatre on Saturday 4th September which will hopefully feature past conductors and playing members of the Band. Tickets will be available from the Roses Theatre shortly so don’t miss out! An Anniversary lunch is also planned at the Abbey Refectory on Sunday 5th September for past and present members of the Band. Any past players or conductors of the band that would like to take part in our Anniversary celebrations are requested to contact us, since we hope to have as many past members there as possible. Heya guys! Welcome to tmp!
Looking forward to the weekend, gonna be a bit of a slog but hopefully we'll have an audience!

See you at training band on Friday! :p

Thanks to everyone who turned up to listen to us on our tour of the Tewkesbury area. We had a great time and gained a lot of positive feedback.

If there are any other bands out there considering such a venture I would recommend it. The local publicity that you can get for your band is unbelievable, even if the national banding press takes an eternity to take notice or requests payment to mention that there are hard working lower section bands out there!

Be warned though, it is hard work for all involved but in the end it is very rewarding.

Thanks to themouthpiece for providing a free notice board service.

Happy Birthday John [Tewkeshorn] - hope you had a great day, and have fun with themouthpiece band at the whit marches. 8)
