I have just received a new CD from Park Recordings with tracks by the CWS Manchester Band under Eric Ball, Fred Roberts & Alex Mortimer.
It's worth buying for the "live" recording of Force of Destiny at the RAH in 1962 !
What a band this was. If you thought you have heard too many performances of this piece, think again. The technical detail has so much time and space, and there is some beautiful quiet playing. This performance is even better than the old LP.
Also brilliant is Scena Sinfonica by Henry Gheel.
Unfortunatley, the Bellemonte Variations are abridged and the quality of that recording is not so good.
Obviously Derek Garside's solos are a real joy as well.
Worth buying for the Force of Destiny alone.
