Butlins 2009

Claws away eh ladies? We'll end up with fur all over the Butlins bar at this rate.

I'm quite looking forward to the contest, having heard how superior to Pontins it is. If anything can outshine that beacon of hospitality and luxury I'll be amazed.

lol Spot on.

Anyone know when the Grimethorpe concert is?

For them to introduce it without prior consultation, or even advanced warning is even more so....

If the contest format proves less than optimum, as you so aptly put it, then I do hope they reconsider it. I was rather hoping they might have considered some of the issues raised (And by no means just by myself) on this thread beforehand, but that doesn't appear to have happened.

As long as they get more people spending more money by staying over, I'm sure they'll not worry too much about the format.

There is a fairly simple solution to your gripe about the format Andi... don't go.

Has anyone seen a line up of competitors yet for 2009? I'd like to set up the predictions, so any info would be gratefully received. :)

I'm assuming you have an equally obvious solution to the one about no-one being told till they'd agreed to enter (and presumably paid the entry fee) ?

I'm hardly likely to resign from my band for a weekend over it am I?

Either way, despite the doubts I have over the new 1st section format, I'll still agree it's a heck of a sight better contest than pontins!!!

All they can do is try the new 1st section format. I think its a better idea than doing the whole day with that many bands (anyone else remember 30+ at midlands areas).

If any band had a real issue with the change I am sure the organisers would have refunded the entry fee on receipt of an official complaint.

Lets see how it goes... There arent many contests nowadays where everyone gets together in one location and play/socialise on the same day :)

Butlins have done it !nothing to prove now, entries increasing each year, anyone who does not like it should stay at home and miss the greatest party of the year...or keep going to Pontins....you SADDOS.

I am led to believe its friday night, but normally the champion band from the year before play that night so maybe its wrong.

Desford concert plus Stan Lippeatt and friends - friday night
Grimethorpe concert plus Grimestein Oompah Band in Jaks- saturday night
Fodens concert - sunday night

What more could anyone want?

Well speaking personally I would want some good none brass band entertainment as well.
In past years the real highlights for me have been the Royal Marines core of drums, National Youth Jazz Orchestra and Dennis Rollins. Even Bucks Fizz and the Kylie tribute band were ok.
I think you get all the brass band entertainment you need in the Sunday championship entertainment contest whilst sitting back recovering from the Saturday night hangover.

Happy New Year!

I have been following this thread with much interest as I will be making my first trip to the UK and will be in attendance at Butlins. I will be set up in the NABBA information stand. I am VERY excited and looking forward to hearing many fine bands in all sections and meeting a great number of new friends. Be sure to stop by the booth and get a CD or t-shirt or some other trinket (all free of course).

I too have been trying to find a list of competing bands, but none of the obvious sites have given me anything for the 2009 contest. Has anyone else had any luck yet?

Should we wish to meet and greet friends in real life rather than on here, how will we recognise each other?

I'll be trailing an 18 foot cross behind me because of something I'm passionate about. Happy to talk mano a mano about it to anyone who asks.
