Not EXACTLY brass band pick up line but the true story of how I met my other half 2 years ago....
Although she lives on the Isle of Arran (where I'm soon to move) my girlfriend (Frenchie, who has contributed here in the past) was born a Londoner like me. In the days of the Inner London Education Authority, there were regular holiday courses for bands and orchestras to meet for a week and give concerts. The London Schools Symphony Orchestra and the Saturday music school the Centre For Young Musicians (both still going strong) were two such activities.
As far as the LSSO goes, before I was accepted into their ranks, our music teacher encouraged us to go and see them play at the Royal Festival Hall on a number of occasions. I kept the programmes and out of curiosity from time to time, went back to the player lists in the programmes to see 'who I knew'. And certain names just stayed 'in the memory bank' whether I knew them or not.
Although Frenchie is a couple of years older than me, she played with the LSSO three years before I did. She also had her last year at the Centre for Young Musicians in my first year there (1977). However, we never met (knowingly, anyway)
Two years ago, at the Workers Music Association Summer School (see signature) Frenchie turned up as a student, me as a tutor. We all had name badges on and the old programmes for the LSSO concerts I attended, suddenly sparked a memory jog So I went up to her and said
'Didn't you play in the London Schools Symphony Orchestra?'
Her answer is somewhat unprintable but she says to me now that I was saying to her 'Aren't you old!' Nevertheless, as a precursor to us 'hitting it off', it worked wonders as a chat up line! Small world, though...... going to the same music school as kids and never meeting, only to do so 27 years later in Sheffield living 450 miles apart!
Still, that chat up line won't work with most women....
