Brass Band music on radio

Given the recent complaints about the lack of Brass Band music on radio, I feel that there is probably a market for a 'pure' Brass Band station broadcast over the Internet.
The question is.... are people willing to pay a small subsciption to receive it?

If there is positive response I will post link to a web site for your suggestions and preferences.

Definitely. But only one which doesn't just play CDs. Studio recordings and live/recorded concert performances would be a must. Along with weekend features for Pontins, Europeans, Open and regular news and announcements etc. etc.

All things are possible :lol:
As this would be a labour of love not a commercial venture, spending time updating playlists etc. isn't a chore.
Personally I would like to include classic recordings from the 50s and 60s. There are some tremendous recordings in existence that never get air-play.

I have thought about it, but as my Brass Band music collection is slightly limited at the moment due to being at university, coupled with final year exams made me forget about it!

It's certainly a good idea. There are a few legal issues surrounding a pure internet radio station though regarding licenses. For a few more details http://www.mediauk.com/article/1. I don't really see it as a massive issue as Brass Band music is only really produced by specialist recording companies like Doyen, WoB etc.

I am not an expert in the field, but I do have a few contacts that might be able to help.

Agreed!!!!
The station would be set up via one of the reputable companies (i.e. live365.com) that include ASCAP / BMI fees in their monthly charges - hence the subscriptions!!
Everything would be done legally and because the fees are paid, the right people should receive the fruits of their work.

There haven't been any negative issues raised here, if anyone from one of the recording / publishing companies has comments or concerns they would rather make privately, either PM me or email me.

As well as ASCAP/BMI fees anyone running the station who is economically based in the UK would have to pay dues to PRS/MCPS as well and these can come to about £400 per quarter.

I have been involved with an internet radio station for about 12 months (we are currently off air - or should that be off web!) and the costs of running a station are tremendous. We did an RSL (28 day Restricted Sevice Licence) last June, broadcasting to Banbury on 106.4FM and was well received - I even managed to get a 2hr brass programme onto the schedule but we only managed to do one show - all down to money! Although I have to say that the station manager was keen for a BB show at the end of the day no sponsorship=no show.

very true, but without brass being played at least somewhere there is little chance of joe public being able to get to hear what we all love so much.

To do things properly involves fees, performance rights and the originators of the music - writers and performers - getting reasonable and appropriate recompense.

to be honest I don't think I would use it that often that I'd want to send money to someone I don't know, and I resent the implication that I'm too immature to understand all the costs of this little venture. I just can't see that a purely brass band station would have anything more than a hugely limited appeal, and if you hope to cover all your costs from subscription fees alone it's going to be pretty expensive for your members.

When I have listened to it, it has always been of poor quality and I have a broadband connection. I think there should be one devoted radio station (like classic FM for example) that plays brass band music 24/7-it would have to play a variety though! Not everyone has access to the internet and with a radio, you can listen to it any time-in the car, at work, in bed e.t.c.! Either that, or Mr Renton increases his air time and plays some decent music!

I think it is more to do with it being the cheap subscription that this guy has which is on a stupidly slow bit-rate hence the bad quality, irrespective of whether you are on 1Mb Broadband or 28k dial-up!

I've written in another thread the costs of the basic licenses for a national radio station are sky high and it will not be commerically viable unless you are certain to get the listeners.

I think the only hope will be to try and persuade the BBC to give Frank Renton his extra half-hour back at to extend the coverage of Sounds of Brass to other local radio stations.

With the advent of digital radio I think that there will be many more 'anorak' type radio stations appearing in the future. Like such things already, (Sky T.V) we are going to have to pay something for our listening pleasure.
Perhaps a digi-radio with a subscription card in that you replace every month with a new card. The card coming in a magazine that has all the articles/reports/features and listings for the month and can carry the necessary advertising to cover much of the cost and bring subscription fees to a minimum.
