Sorry to ask a stupid question, but what's the point of membership? To attend contests or does it have other benefits?

There doesn't seem to be a point - thats why every band I've ever been in has opted not to join! Any "services" provided, eg registry and contest organsation, are available to all bands and cost the same regardless of membership.
