Band Night

Tuesday and before Saturday/Weekend engagements we have practice on the Friday but then cancel Tuesday afterwards.

To be a little contoversial however, the two nights a week practice doesn't give either night a particularly good attendance. In my view this is because some S.A. bandpersons are there because of a feeling of duty rather than because they are keen on banding. The feeling then is that they have 'done their duty' by being at one practice.

Obviously some members of the band do have other commitments i.e. to Songsters(choir) and of course, services on a Sunday but it becomes extremely frustrating for the 100%ers.

We have band practice Thursday nights, and the songsters (choir) meet on Wednesday. Prior to a special concert or weekend away the section concerned will usually have a practice on each of the two nights that week.

Unlike Mike, we are fortunate in that we usually get a fairly good turnout for both practices, with the excepton of those with work commitments on a Wednesday. From October to December many of us are also involved in Friday night practices for our Christmas presentation, either as singers or players.

I think most bands have this problem Mike :x

When I seen this topic I thought 'I cant be bothered to read that (but I will anyway)'. I find it strange that there is such a difference between rehearsal times.

On the whole, it seems that most bands have 2 rehearsals a week. I thought that the idea was to spread the rehearsals so that they are evenly spaced. My band rehearses Monday and Thursday. The idea is that there are 2 and 3 days between rehearsals.

Tuesday and Thursday means that you have 1 day off between rehearsals then 4 off.

What if you have a tricky part given out on Tuesday and the conductor wants it ready for Thursday and there is a concert on Friday? You would only have 1 day to rehearse it.

Also I think that sort of rehearsal schedule would affect stamina. Nothing can replace attending a full band rehearsal. As much practise as you do at home you never really truly play at e.g. ff for any sustained period as you are required to do. By spreading it out I would have thought that it would improve the situation.

Just my opinion.

Monday and Friday plus Wednesday for my wind band.
This week however I will have been to a reahearsal every night as I went to my old band on Tuesday to hand in my Uniform and bandroom keys, and to a band I am helping out for a concert on Saturday for a rehearsal on Thursday.
I will have to cut down as I get no time to practice and my family are getting very annoyed - especially if I haven't time to cook tea

Broxburn does a Wednesday sunday rehearsals, and Newlands do just the Mondays (Although I'll have that changed to 2 nights a week soon I think)

Thursday, 2 hours no break. Twice a week (has traditionally been Sunday added) before contest. I agree too to the comments about additional rehearsals cutting into attendance. One a week is pretty easy to get virtually everyone there most of the time. Twice starts to cut into more schedules, although I'm sure if that's the tradition with your band, then it's a known expectation coming in, not the same as part of the year one way, part the other. I see some overlap with the thread on non-banding partners (which I deliberately avoided....)

Tuesday and Friday for us at Pennine. I think that gives us a nice space (two nights) to look at new parts when handed out on Tuesday then the weekend and Monday to practice before its Tuesday again.
Must confess really suprised how many bands practice on a Sunday! Thats something I've never done in all my years of banding, but if it works who am I to knock it?

Mondays and Thursdays at Imps, 8-10pm with a five minute break at 9.05 so we can listen to the lovely local children throw stones and bottles (and no doubt soon, fireworks!) at the bandroom. One of my old bands used to rehearse Sunday mornings....great for clearing the head after Saturday night (not), but it did work as a thirst enhancer for a Sunday lunchtime session.
