    Christmas Day Practice

If your playing is going to fall apart for the sake of missing one day's practice you are doing something horribly wrong. Also if you think your area result is linked to a player or a band missing a days practice then you should step away from the stand and put down the little white stick...

Mickleover RBL in Derby looking for a band for remembrance day

Nothing to do with me but someone over on the brass forum appears a bit desperate for a band in the Derby area to do remembrance day and it doesn't look like they found tMP. http://www.brass-forum.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1204543415/15#15

Watchet Town Band would like to thank Chalgrove Band

Glad I could help out. Always fun to sit in and help another band. Mike (one of the cornets)

    morning playing

Touthpaste, mouthwash and if you're a bloke shaving all make your lips swell. So clean your teeth as early as you can before playing and lay off the mouthwash and shaving (unless you're going to be judged on deportment).

    Poaching - Right or Wrong?

The grass may always look greener in another band but without other bands telling players there are vacancies you may not even realise there is an opportunity elsewhere. As said by thousands of others before me if a player is happy where they are they won't move. The new band must be offering...

    Differences between trumpet and cornet

That is my experience and when playing the trumpet I was told to use my air "like a laser" and when playing the cornet "broad warm air". I happen to have a Wedgwood trumpet and cornet. With these instruments I find the trumpet is easier to play more technical passages than the cornet. The...

    Differences between trumpet and cornet

I think we agree that there is little technical difference between the Trumpet and the Cornet. Both, pretty much, have the same degree of conical and straight bore. But there is the difference of where the conical and straight bore actually is. With a trumpet there is a long section of...

SmithWatkins - calling all cornet, trumpet and flugel players!

I'm not disputing that James Shepperd has a SW cornet but I do know that he normally plays on a Wedgwood.

SmithWatkins - calling all cornet, trumpet and flugel players!

I found that when I had an SW that it did tend to be a bit brighter than the Bessons, Getzens and Yamaha's. That was playing with a Sparx 4 mouthpiece. You could blend but I found it a bit too easy to stick out. I now have a Wedgwood.

SmithWatkins - calling all cornet, trumpet and flugel players!

The Smith Watkins instruments are Kanstuls. This may have changed but they are shipped unfinished to the UK, Smith Watkins fit lead pipes and then they are finished by Eclipse e.g. sliver plated.

    Smith & Watkins Cornets

Sparx are longer shank mouthpieces so it is very possible that you will need to push the slide in further on the SW to keep it in tune. Like I said I used to play on a Smith Watkins and I didn't have any issues with tuning using Sparx mouthpieces. I also tend to have the tuning slide in to...

    Smith & Watkins Cornets

Hello AndyH, If you are finding the DW3b "a bit of a chore" as a Repiano mouthpiece then I think you will have a harder time with a Sparx DV. I have used a Sparx 4 DV in a Smith Watkins Cornet and it was a nice mouthpiece cornet combination but hard work above the stave.

Favourite Flugel? ,which Flugel you play ?

Blimey hvb_shizzle you are the first person on a forum who has actually said they don't like Eclipse. I haven't played one so cannot comment directly but it has surprised me that I have never read a negative comment about them.

Favourite Flugel? ,which Flugel you play ?

I have a silver plate Van Laar B3 Flugel and it is very much the flugel of today! The UK has Eclipse and the Netherlands has Van Laar but in my mind the smart money goes to Europe and buys the same quality for much less money. Remember there is no tax to pay when you import instruments from...

should we be playing the rotary trumpet?

I have a rotary cornet in Bb. Disappointingly it doesn't use normal cornet mouthpieces as it is designed to use trumpet shanks. But it makes a passable cornet sound with a deep trumpet mouthpiece. I have used a cornet to trumpet mouthpiece adapter but it messes up the intonation on the...
