    Leamington Contest 2010

How about Pershore High School? I hear it's quite handy, and available at an acceptable price.

    Leamington Contest 2010

It's a shame it's moving but, having organised an event at the Spa Centre in the past, it's not exactly a cheap place to book. Hopefully bands will continue to support the contest at it's new location. On another note, could anyone tell me what Warwick Uni played and where they came?

    Election the Aftermath

Meh, if it took more than 5 seconds on google to poke holes in your argument I probably wouldn't bother. Worzel's no fun on a night out - he starts singing show tunes and talking about his worrying personal hygiene.

    Election the Aftermath

Ah yeah, but I don't have the energy to rip into the logic of the thing. It's like when people compare national debt to credit card debt, and public spending to shopping in Waitrose. It's unjustified reductionism utilised to reach preconceived conclusions. I do think that falsely attributing...

    Election the Aftermath

Of course it makes a difference. "Look what this economics professor says about the tax system" is likely to have more impact than "This is why I think the tax system is bad". Why else would they stick the guy's name on there? Basically it's a get out of jail free card for anyone to post it...

    Election the Aftermath

lol from http://davidk.myweb.uga.edu/ It's always fun to fraudulently stick someone's name on your flawed logic to make it seem more credible.

    Election the Aftermath

Some of the logic in here reminds me of Dr Fox on that Brass Eye episode "There's no real evidence for it, but it is scientific fact"

    Election the Aftermath

Of course we tax some people more than others. We have a progressive(ish) tax system for income tax. We tax those that consume more than others through VAT. We tax companies that damage the environment a bit more than those that don't. That's pretty much how all taxes work - some people pay more...

    Election the Aftermath

Can we at least be honest about the level of taxation. It's only 40% of any money OVER £325,000. If they take anything like 40% of your estate, you'd have to be leaving an amount that made £325,000 negligible. In fact I imagine most people don't pay much inheritance tax at all, it's just those...

    Election the Aftermath

I don't think that free trade would work when the tax environments of the two countries are so fundamentally different. Unless you can convince everyone to drop sales and export taxes. And I buy the Guardian for the sports.

    Election the Aftermath

Ah yes, the best way to deal with poverty is to stop poor people breeding. That way they'll all be dead in a few years.

    Election the Aftermath

Of course, you are allowed to leave your children as much as £325,000 completely tax free. That's plenty to keep them happy for many years to come, and the government aren't taking a penny! You add in a few £3000 "gifts" over the years and some other fairly simple tax dodges and you're able to...

    Election the Aftermath

We need to tax tourists, because in our sales tax-free utopia, we suddenly become a massive draw to people from abroad looking for a bargain. Our economy currently relies fairly heavily on the tax generated from sales to tourists who don't pay income tax here. Also, as those people probably have...

    Election the Aftermath

You're not paying tax twice with inheritance tax. You pay tax on your earnings, and then your offspring pay tax on what they inherit. Why do they deserve to get a large amount of money tax free?

    Election the Aftermath

Ah sorry, I got excited when I saw "flat rate of tax" and failed to notice the accompanying Universal benefit. It sounds ok in principle, but it doesn't seem to take into account the varying needs of different groups in society. For example, a disabled single parent of 4 living in London...

    Election the Aftermath

There are certain areas of tax "avoidance", including pension tax relief, that have a clear and tangible benefit to the UK economy. In the case of pension tax relief, it encourages people to fund their own retirement. Similarly with tax relief on ISAs - encouraging people to save money makes...

    Election the Aftermath

It could quite easily make a bigger contribution to the country than the much lauded "crackdown on benefits cheats". Strangely, when someone like Phillip Green avoids huge amounts of tax by doing things which are 'technically' legal, but clearly outside the spirit of the law, we get told...
