Funny Band story: on our Chicago trip from March 19-23, 08.

Why leave the Salvation Army out of it? I love Salvation Army bashing. I don't think that, other than Eric Ball, it has ever added anything to quality brass band music.

Salvation Army, eh? God moves in mysterious ways; indeed he must do.

    My Funny Valentine

I'm wanting to play Rogers and Hart's 'My Funny Valentine' as a flugel solo with my brass band. I also play a bit of jazz so my intention is to just jam over the top of the band. I wonder if anybody knows of brass band arrangements of My Funny Valentine? I know of (but haven't heard) Alan...

    Hammonds Hawley Band Reunion

Yes Ian, I'm still playing. In fact I'm now playing Flugel for Waratah Newcastle No. 2 band, and we were crowned Australian C Grade Champions in Brisbane just last night.

Best insults to players from conductors

We had a bone who was having trouble sensing the ictus, and so was entering early. He also happenned to be a 35 year old virgin who still lived with his mum. Curry: You ever had a girlfriend? Bone: No. Curry: Well if you ever get one you'll find you're premature there as well.

    Hammonds Hawley Band Reunion

Hello Barrytone Yes, I was rep at the '87 Yorkshire area with Hammonds Hawley. I don't have as fond memories as you. It was my first 'proper' contest, and I found Stantonbury Festival the most uninspiring piece of music, conducted in the most uninspiring fashion. I was about to give the whole...

    Hammonds Hawley Band Reunion

Statto I'd like to take issue with some of your facts. I played with Hammonds Hawley (fourth section) in 1987, and there was still a Hammons Sauce Works Band (top section). Hawley played in a converted church at the bottom of Baildon whereas Sauce still played in the band room on the right...

    Time to change trombone clefs?

Easy. Learn to the play the piano. I don't think that anybody should go near any other muscial instrument until they have developed keyboard fluency...and it means you can read both clefs. I took up trad jazz a few years ago, after previously restricting myself to the same old brass band...

    Rehearsals per week

And whilst I'm on one, I don't consider the Salvation Army to have anything to do with my hobby. Yes, I know about Eric Ball blah blah blah. But I have also experienced TWO holier-than-thou conductors from SA roots just about kill two bands that I have been associated with. I commend...

    Rehearsals per week

Well thats interesting. My Australian brethren should take note. There is only one way to do it, and that is twice a week. Thanks for replying to this thread. I also note that the aussie made an excuse about why he can't manage more than one a week. The number of times I have heard 'study' as...

    Rehearsals per week

You didn't touch a nerve, you just talked...well how should I say it on this forum.....errr...Australian. I can tell you, Waratah are most certainly not what I would call a 'Great Band'. I very much doubt whether Darebin City is either, but I will make sure I listen to you at Brisbane.

    Rehearsals per week

Obviously I am not talking about extra rehearsals for competitions. We are going to Brisbane too, and we are doing more rehearsals than normal I'm talking week in week out stuff. Around here (Hunter Valley) it's once a week, including our top local band Waratah. And I don't mean to have a...

    Rehearsals per week

I've just been thinking about the number of rehearsals a week that bands arrange. I played in Yorkshire in bands ranging from non-competing village outfits in the Yorkshire Dales to top section bands. All of them rehearse twice a week. I gave banding up when I turned 18 (i.e. 14 years ago)...

Rudest thing you've seen in a concert

Oh, I have remembered something. Playing in an entertainment contest at St Mary's Band Club in Sydney. There are two or three kids screaming and running around. I went to investigate after we had played and discovered that they were the offspring of the conductor of a rival band. His wife had...

Rudest thing you've seen in a concert

In my time with Kippax band we played in the band club every month. The old dears would love a chat whilst the band was playing but woe betide anyone if they dropped a pin during the bingo at half time. I then vowed never to fraternise with the working classes.

    Beta Blockers

Call me naieve, but somebody told me the other day that it is quite common for people to take beta blockers before going on the contest stage. Is this right?
