    Championship Section Arrogance.

Crikey. I came back to chat to an American chap who had some sort questions about a sop solo 'wot I wrote' and thought I'd have a look around to see what had changed in the four or five years I've been absent. The answer appears to be not much. Top section players can come across as arrogant...

"Vilja" by Lehar, arr. Andi Cook -- a couple of questions

Hi Jim. Just had this pointed out to me by a friend after a long absence from this forum. Thanks for the interest in the arrangement! The solo part is identical to Lehar's vocal score, though transposed to the key for a soprano cornet soloist. At its lowest is, it reaches a D at the lowest...

Dammit. 5'11". Looks like I'd better stick to writing and bass playing....

    National Finals Test-pieces - errata

Ignore the one about bar 54 in the slow movement. The dynamics are right, it's just all about context - which we didn't really find on the first few run-throughs.

    National Finals Test-pieces - errata

There's been a few picked out of the score - which I don't have to hand at the moment. It's mostly missing dynamics, performance instructions that don't make sense, rather than actual wrong notes. For example, bar 84 of the 3rd movement, BBb basses are unison with bass trom. Bass trom hairpins...

    National Finals Test-pieces - errata

Hi all. Is anyone aware of Errata sheets for any of the national finals test pieces? There's a few things about 'Fanfares and Love Songs' which don't sit right, so I'd like to check them. Not turned anything up in the usual places (google, Kapitol website etc.)

    Brighouse March and Hymn Contest

As usual, publishers turn things round faster than I believed possible. (Well done PMP!)

    Brighouse March and Hymn Contest

No worries. Essentially, we're agreeing on the point anyway! ;) I promised a period of exclusivity to the bands in question - but it should be within a few weeks, depending on how busy the publishers are preparing for the winter concert season. :)

    Brighouse March and Hymn Contest

If you mean Pennine music's website that's Gavin Somerset's website. If you mean Kirklees music, that's Graham Horsfield's. I personally don't have a website up and running... yet... but It's not really a hymn IMHO. It's an air, with no religious content in the words at all...

    Brighouse March and Hymn Contest

Nope. Firstly because it's not really a hymn, (though why it should have to be a 'hymn' i don't know, surely any slow melody is OK) and secondly if you look in fourth place, you'll see a band with 99 points on the hymn....

    English Nationals 2013

If we're potentially discussing the popularity of the English nationals as a contest - I wonder how many bands enter it only because of the sure-fire knowledge there is no way they can win it? And no, I'm not being facetious there either.

    Brighouse March Contest 2013

Usually the mods advise against posting programmes before the contest.... But you'll hear one or two of mine from more than one band if you listen closely....

Wilfred Heaton's Praise - as a contest march?

It is a sad indictment of the way contesting is that an average attempt at 'Ravenswood' will likely finish above a sublime performance of 'Red Shield' - and that should (for example) I write a march for a band, and they decide to use it on the contest stand, that's a guaranteed last place no...

Wilfred Heaton's Praise - as a contest march?

Forgive me for pointing out the obvious, but I'm fairly sure praise does have a DC at the very least - though without a score I can't recall if it's a DC al fine or a DC al coda. Stupid rule either way.....

    Innovations in Banding.

Music notation software. This has been both a blessing and a curse. It has increased the facility with which people like myself, who were denied the opporunity to study music at a younger age, can learn, adapt and increase their knowledge to the point where (if I say so myself) we can produce...

    Rest in Peace Mrs Thatcher.

Many will debate the 'facts' of thatcher's time in office. Those of us who have studied both history and politics to a high level know that the idea of a 'fact' is a pretty mistaken one. Everything is coloured by our own point of view, and the interpretation we place on it from our own point...
