Soprano Cornet at Brighouse and Rastrick

I wouldn't trust that. I can see at least one name which certainly shouldn't be on there...

The history of the Bb Cornet

Well, Kapitol's rules do state: "Brass instrumentation will be from the following list: Eb Soprano Cornet, Bb Cornet, Bb Flugel Horn, Eb Tenor Horn, Bb Baritone, Bb Euphonium, Slide Trombones, Eb and EEb Bass, Bb and BBb Bass." Fair point about the vagueness of what does or does not actually...

    Plastic Tuba's

That rule goes back to controversy at Belle Vue in the 19th century, when a player switched from euphonium to valve trombone mid-piece and picked up two 'best player' prizes as a result.

    Expences

45p is what the government sees as the maximum for fair use of a vehicle. It isn't a recommendation that everyone should charge it for depping! Encouraging a 'pence per mile' approach might just end up costing more. As has already been said, a lot of this should be settled before the gig, and...

    Brass Band 28/28 competition

I'd stick a few quid each-way on the 'Rest of the world' band.

    Brass Band 28/28 competition

Yeah, the simple idea of a 4 mile radius would create some odd situations. Faireys could draw from half of Manchester, but I'm not sure Grimey and Carlton Main would be up for the collaborative enterprise involved...

Brass Bands:The Search for the Other

It'll be in the small print somewhere, they don't need to 'send it out' if it's a given for bands registered with their local association.

Brass Bands:The Search for the Other

Indeed. That's why a 19th century contest ended in arguments, because the euph player switched to a valved trombone halfway through, and won two prizes as a result. That's why there's rules against playing more than one brass instrument unless specified by the score, and regulations about valve...

Brass Bands:The Search for the Other

If the contest follows the example of the rules for the area contests, then the list of brass instruments to be used is quite specific.

Cheating is ok, because it has always happened (and apparently everyone does it)

You'd have to add a whole new layer of bureaucracy to the registration system, to record not just who is playing for each band but which instrument/part is being played, and then also cross-checking these records against all other contests....given how the current organisations cope with the...

Cheating is ok, because it has always happened (and apparently everyone does it)

I think there's a limit on how frequently they can change registrations, though?

    Band subs

Targetting only a 'brass band follower' audience is a problem, not a solution, as you have already identified. Instead, target and cultivate new audiences. There's no need to be based in traditional brass band territory to do so.

    Band subs

The results are inevitably going to vary. One factor for us was that, in the area we are based, a 'normal' ticket price is a lot of money for quite a few people. There's also the 'unknown' quantity for the audience: if they have no idea whether it's something they'll enjoy or whether they'll...

    Band subs

Absolutely. It's infuriating how low "find new sources of income" can be on the list of priorities! FWIW, our last self-promoted concert was free, as opposed to typical ticket prices for the ones before. The audience was twice as big, literally standing room only. Partly thanks to an MD who was...

depped for the 100 top ranked bands on 4barsrest.

With enough misplaced determination and a big bank balance, any half-decent player could spend your life finding opportunities to fill in a seat on the back row at some gig for "XYZ (Ranked 82nd In The World!!)". (No offence intended to whoever is currently ranked 82nd! :p )

    Band subs

Aren't they being paid to be a leader, though? (If they're not succeeding, or not pitching it right, they're maybe not right for that band.) Stunning logic. Do harder test pieces cost less? Does playing high notes get you a rebate on the electric bill?

Is there a way back for brass bands?

Learning a new clef fluently is not hard. Violin-to-viola transferees have alto clef sorted within weeks at most. If they've been told that it is hard, or that they will have to perform mental gymnastics involving adding flats rather than simply spening a short amout of time patiently learning...
