Yes, folks, you're right ... Yes folks, you're right, I can officially confirm that Dave Payn has finally lost it altogether! I'll have him sectioned on Monday (any suggestions for which section?!?). I also note that there have been 25757 posts since I last logged on a couple of weeks ago, so...

    Who has snow?

Not much snow here this morning, but enough to set my car off on a gentle slide into the ditch at 7.15am. Went and knocked on local farmer's door and he cheerfully welcomed me with "Good morning! Are you stuck?" before hauling the car back onto the road with his trusty tractor. Frenchie

    How far do you travel?

32 miles round trip (about 40 minutes each way but I allow an hour to make allowances for stray sheep, tractors, slow lorries etc). The next nearest band would require an overnight stay across the water. And occasional 900 mile round trips to Croydon (and sometimes Fulham!). Frenchie

Could French Horns play a part in the brass band?

Oh, wonkybaton, :hammer ! Go to a performance of Strauss's Alpine Symphony, marvel at the consummate musicianship of the twelve horn players and the beauty of the sound, and then come back here and eat your words! Frenchie

Flugel mouthpieces - advice and opinions sought

Respected flugel players! Would anyone like to walk me gently through the respective merits of a Denis Wick 2FL and a Denis Wick 4FL mouthpiece? There seems very little difference apart from the rim width according to the tech. spec. so which is best for what sort of result, in your opinion...

Could French Horns play a part in the brass band?

Point taken Pythagoras, but you'd perhaps be surprised how little it takes a French Horn player to turn out to play! Incidentally, I have just been looking at a picture of my great-grandfather with the Braughing Silver Band, taken in the 1880s and there is a gentleman in the front row proudly...

Could French Horns play a part in the brass band?

Orchestral music sometimes has, two, sometimes four, and sometimes as many as twelve French horn parts. Few amateur orchestras have the full complement of horns (most just have a couple), and very often they will include in their concert programmes a piece for which the have drafted in a couple...

Could French Horns play a part in the brass band?

If you mean Highland Cathedral, then I've had the pleasure to play in a couple of performances of this, complete with bagpipes. It is a fine and stirring piece. On occasion, when we've been unable to rope in a piper, we've had a solo cornet play the piper's part, but the tone colour of the piece...

Could French Horns play a part in the brass band?

I assume you meant Eric Ball wanted the sound of tenor horns, so wrote for brass band, of course. The original question in this thread, however, wasn't "can French Horns replace any particular brass band instrument", but could they be included in a brass band? To me included can mean either all...

Could French Horns play a part in the brass band?

But my experience of banding (and, yes, I do have some, playing "proper" brass band instruments!) shows that bands do get in extra players at concert and contest times in order to fill out the gaps in the standard line-up, and these people can be part-time participants in the social scene...

Could French Horns play a part in the brass band?

But I don't think Dave Payn was suggesting that French Horns become a permanent fixture in Brass Bands, was he? Frenchie
