Petition re. Bands and Child Performance Licences

It would be good to know This is often the trouble with these and similar petitions. Everyone places (sometimes mis-guided) trust in those lobbying ahead of them without questioning why. I reiterate, despite lots of noise and concern about the licencing policy, I'm yet to hear anything that...

Petition re. Bands and Child Performance Licences

Why is it important? Your post seems to support the licencing requirement, but you suggest we sign the petition to stop it. Have I missed something?

Petition re. Bands and Child Performance Licences

Fair enough. If I were promoting colleagues to sign a petition I'd want to be able to share the practical implications. I wonder how many people have signed it without understanding or deciding for themselves whether or not it is really needed.

Petition re. Bands and Child Performance Licences

Get a licence then. Doesn't sound difficult, certainly much easier than getting the legislation changed. It sounds like other organisations 'unfairly' caught by the rule are just getting on with it and focusing their efforts on their hobby. That's where my vote goes. If that makes be 'pathetic'...

Petition re. Bands and Child Performance Licences

It would be useful if the petition outlined the supposed barriers or issues this creates. Briefly looking at the other thread on the subject on here, it seems that regional associations are getting licences to cover bands and that it isn't a big deal. I think the government has got more...

    Measurements of vibrato

I'm with Tom on this. If a study of vibrato is an interesting academic study for the OP then fill your boots. Expecting to then use it to inform and train players, like so many retrospective theories will kill the art and enjoyment for many.

Conducting workshop - why so little interest?

I stopped watching the video at the point that the presenter stated his preference was for mid-last century music and that science had proven it was better then. Both these statements demonstrate that the rest of the presentation would be heavily biased. Musical genres have widened and...

Conducting workshop - why so little interest?

That's such an uninformed and biggotted view. If you happen to go outside your house from time to time, you will see young people listening to music without any visual content whatsoever. We're in an age where listening to music has never been more accessible nor so highly consumed.

Conducting workshop - why so little interest?

Pop songs sell to the evolving target audience and just because it's not to everyone's taste, it doesn't mean that the talent of those involved is any less that their predecessors.

I'm a bit taken back by this unnecessary comment. I'm sure they had their reasons.

Stop it! My ribs are aching ;)

    New "Christmas Collection" books

Thanks MissMD. I must admit that 'We Wish You...' in a more friendly key (assuming it is) than the NCP concert Gb major sounds like a positive step :) I have reservations about the inclusion of more pop songs. NCP seemed to have got the balance right with the (mainly) tasteful songs at the back...

    New "Christmas Collection" books

Has anyone here used the new Christmas Collection books yet? If so, what's your thoughts? Is it worth swapping or shall we stick with the the New Christmas Praise books (which I'm rather fond of) until they disintegrate?

Expected Range of a Baritone Player

I was once asked incredulously why I was playing 3rd cornet. My response, because there isn't a 4th cornet part :)

Expected Range of a Baritone Player

There's a good video by James Morrison online somewhere discussing how to hit (very) high notes. Might be worth seeking that out. From memory, he demonstrates the ill-effects of the natural tendency to apply more pressure.

Learning a brass instrument in the UK

My experience is quite the opposite. 'Junior' bands seem to be renaming themselves 'Training' bands or similar because the age range is increasing. They seem to be becoming particularly popular with retirees.

    New Geneva Bb Cornets

Rosehill have a very good choice and allow plenty of time to play and decide without watching over you in the upstairs room.
