Dear all TMP'ers....
I need advice for money making ventures.
student life seems to be getting more and more expensive, and i seem to be managing worse than most to control my budget.
(i really need to stop compulsively buying percussion equipment!)
My 8 hour-a-week job, apart from...
Which hymns do you play at the start of your rehearsals and why?
With my band i tend to go for hymns with lots of flats, lots of sustained notes, or hymns i know and like?
Which hymns do you like/hate playing?
Do you think hymn playing is vital in a band rehearsal?
I'm looking for someone to try out a few bits of a piece i'm writing.
Its a concert piece not a test piece, although it will be fairly meaty, 4 movements and will end up about 15-20 minutes in total.
The fourth movement is finished, and i have bits of the others. i want to know if my ideas...
I know this CD's fairly old now, but ive only just got a copy- and finally found some decent percussion solos!
I've posted about the lack of solos before, and anyone who agreed with me have a listen, definately food for thought.
If i must review (off topic before i start!):
Well they cant get much worse than the tuba jokes can they?!
A new customer walks into the new store on the block that sells brains. There are three glass cases, each containing a nice wet quivering grey brain. The first one says "Astrophysicist", and it costs $10. The second says "Avon...
Just to say that Fodens put on a great show tonight- Bram Tovey's Requiem's a great piece- listen to it if you ever get chance!
What did anyone else who was there think about it? I thought the programme was really good, its just a shame they did an encore as it spoiled the atmosphere a bit...
The York university brass band has its first concert,
March 2nd '04, 1:00pm in the Jack Lyons concert hall at the university.
it is a short concert (approx 50 mins) as part of the music society concert series.

A woman and a man are involved in a car accident; it's a bad one.
Both of their cars are totally demolished but amazingly neither of them are hurt.
After they crawl out of their cars, the woman says, " So you're a man.
That's interesting. I'm a woman. Wow, just look at our cars...
Why do i do this?
I have a 20 minute seminar to present tomorrow morning, and i have only just started writing it. Why?
Why is it that 'student' and 'organised' magnetically repel eachother?
Anyway, im going slowly insane so if anyone else is up trying to work would you like to tell me some...
I'm starting a band at my uni, and have loads of players interested- one who is a trumpet player (but wants to be forgiven (sorry  ) and move on to cornet!
I want to help him along his way, so i need to borrow a cornet!
Are there any yorkshire bands with a spare cornet lying around, who...
Frankly, its a nightmare!
i would like to have a moan on behalf of us people who are the human tuning fork for the musical world.
Unless the only notes you have ever played are on a Bb instrument/Eb instrument, its almost impossible to learn a brass band instrument properly!

I'm in the process of setting up a brass band at my university, the University of York. Its going really well, possibly too well in fact...... :?
Plenty of players are interested, but we have no money until we sort ourselves out...
Its great that brass soloists get a chance to shine in various regional and national solo competitions, but what about percussion?!
Percussion is an important part of any brass band, and many bands now have percussion soloists. Where are all the solo competitions that allow percussion entry...
Go to any brass band concert and you will hear 'x' number of arrangements and a few old original compositions. Is this because nobody writes original music for band any more, or is this because bands are too scared to play it?!
Your average audience knows pretty much every piece a band will...
I'm looking for brass band people at York University, and possibly the city as well. Basically, I'm setting up a uni brass band and need players. If you or anyone you know is at York and up for playing in a brass band there, please let me know. :)
It'll be a bit of a laugh really, and it wont...
Just a quick note to say- Read the article on www.4barsrest.com about the development of percussion in brass bands! It has some great tips on the performance, tuning and upkeep of timpani. I find that so many players do not know how to (or just don't) tune timpani properly.
There is one...
