    Flugel Horn Sticking Valves

I have a fairly new Yamaha flugel horn (YFH631S) which is fine if I play it every day but if I leave off for a couple of days the valves stick almost to the point of jamming. I have tried using only Yamaha synthetic valve oil as supplied with the instrument, or Blue Juice valve oil, or just...

Petition re. Bands and Child Performance Licences

maybe I jumped in too soon. My initial searches brought up a site that acts for bands and so there is a cost. When I look on the local authority site there does not appear to be a cost and they (Derbyshire) only seem to be bothered if the child is absent from school and being paid.

Petition re. Bands and Child Performance Licences

As I understand it, if a band or amateur performance group, has members under school leaving age then the venue host MUST have a licence/permit to allow such group to perform. It is the responsibility of the band to make sure that a license is in place otherwise the band is held liable. If the...

Many thanks for the suggestions so far, I think each has its own merits depending on the instrument and we will have to investigate further.

    Instrument water works

We were discussing the problems of clearing water from instruments during a concert. Some instruments are nororiously difficult to clear discretely - the drainage noise can be quite loud at times. I personally use a small towel to dampen the noise. Does anyone else have this problem? Any ideas...

    Brassy Mum

For me I would stretch to the Besson The Edgeware is promoted by Norman's who claim its good value but I have not tried the range. Usually come out about the same price as a new Besson student model instrument.

    Brassy Mum

If buying from a dealer make sure that the instrument has been professionally serviced. If private buy then ask the same question but be aware that a professional service may be neccessary at some stage. If it plays well, and all the moving parts move freely and is free from major damage or...

    Marching in glasses

Must admit that is a difficult one, I tend to keep an eye on the back of the one in front and look out for stumble or deviation. I guess it helps that I have had a cataract operation so my distance vision in one eye is not too bad.

Try talking to your optician. I wear varifocal and my optician adjusted the middle distance to coincide with my music pad distance.

    Band Jackets

I need to purchase additional band jackets to match our existing uniform (see photo). We used to get from Handley (Tor Design) who have gone out of business. Can anyone suggest a supplier who will be prepared to make jackets to match? thanks Ken

    Flugel Mouthpiece

Hi I had a 7c equivalent which I agree is very harsh. It is quite a big difference but I found DW4BFL produces much better tone.

    Imperial Lyre Box Screw

Hi Jack Thanks for the detailed description of threads. I have tried 6BA which is too small, waiting arrival of 5BA. It seems Besson changed the Lyre box on the cornet some time after mine was produced (~1992?). I think the newer models use the universal screw readily available. Ken
