I've done the whole weekend of concerts before now but the sad fact is that this year I just couldn't justify spending nearly 100pounds to go to everything, and that's just the tickets.
I did attend the Fodens concert though which was exceptional from start to finish. A real contrast of styles...
Skelmanthorpe got best hymn and Marsden got best contest march.
Apparently Marsden and Skelmanthorpe tied for first so the winner was decided on the result for the road march.
2. Meltham and Meltham Mills
Best 2nd section: Uppermill
Best 3rd section: Huddersfield and Ripponden
Best 4th section: Blackely
Best basses: Meltham
I know there was a best solo cornet and best hymn prize also but i forget which bands were awarded those prizes.
Not getting involved in the Soprano/cornet debate.
Just a hearty Good Luck to all bands competing this weekend. Didn't think i would but am now thoroughly enjoying the piece and looking forward to sunday.
Vienna Nights is a great piece. But I know we've done it twice recently when it was the Open and then Grand Shield piece a few years after. maybe something different? I haven't heard Journey to the Centre of the Earth played out for a while ;)
Some new commissions from up and coming composers would be nice. Simon Dobson did a great piece for the scottish last year and I know Ben Tubbs piece for pontins (i forget which section) a few years back went down pretty well with bands.
When do they announce the pieces for the nationals??
Definately not bitter towards the winners and nothing about my original comment indicates that. Hammonds are an exceptional band that would have taken some beating on the day, and will definatley hold their own against anything the top section throws at them. I was answering another post that...
4barsrest are not the BBC unfortunately. They do not have a charter that means they have to be impartial.
At the end of the day all that matters is what the adjudicators thought and if 4 bars rest don't want to agree with the guys with years of musical experience between them then they are...
Yorkshire area comittee has just sent out an updated gradings table that removes Yorkshire co op completely. Means it isn't so cut and dry now.
Also 13 bands in the top section and 9 in the first, really?
I bet you are gonna make a killing. If you win its 19 pints if you get a member of every band never mind the fact that there are 25 members of a band to make multiple bets with..... You are gonna have one drunk weekend.
