Do you think the move to a Kapitol Owned registry is Good, Bad or . . . . .

I vote 'bad all round' - the last thing our movement needs is capitalism ( or Kapitolism ) creeping in and making profits at our expense. The present registry service has done a fine job for many years and should receive our continued support. The recent minor glitches were just that and should...

    Area pieces

We've had a brief look at Tam O'Shanter - nice piece, lots of variation and plenty to test bands' tone and tight playing. I'm sure it will catch a lot out!! I'm looking forward to the contest... Ian

    Oughtibridge Brass Band - Vacancies

Thanks James but who said we aren't looking for a sop - in fact that is one of the positions we are most anxious to fill on a permanent basis along with a couple of tutti cornets, solo euph and 2nd Eb bass.

    Oughtibridge Brass Band - Vacancies

We have one or two applications for conductor which we are considering - just a case now of finding the one which is most compatible with the band I think. We don't have any regular players from West York yet, I think most can find bands locally to suit their needs. However, if anyone wants to...

    Fancy a blow?

Hathersage band (NE Derbyshire) is looking for new players. We are a non-competing band who just enjoy making music. Anyone is welcome to come along for a blow. We rehearse 7 - 9pm Sunday at Grindleford Methodist church schoolroom.

    unbelievable outbursts

Its interesting what makes a good conductor isn't it... the best one I know is the most quiet, placid person - completely unassuming and yet, when he raises his baton, you somehow feel empowered to play better than you ever have before..... strange.

    How far do you travel?

25 mile round trip to one band, 18 mile round trip to the other..

    unbelievable outbursts

Yes, there was just such an outburst at our band a few months ago which was significant in the run-up to us losing our last conductor. The person responsible was one of our committee members who thought he knew better than the MD but was well exceeding his authority and should have known better...

Where have I heard that before?

Hi Peter, Tried that last night at an Armistice concert, full of old fogeys, and not one knew - they did, however, all hum along to the tune!!

Where have I heard that before?

Hi David, Yes, I am the same, and still attending the brass workshops now at South Emsall. I know this is an old piece which many bands probably have although I wouldn't necessarily label it as '4th section' - it all depends on how well you play it and what music you can extract from it (I...

Where have I heard that before?

Hi Janet, I don't know where you got that idea from - as someone who has played all the instruments in band and now regularly plays solo Eb bass and solo euph, I think I can confidently say that the bass is the most demanding. True, the music page doesn't always look as black as the solo...

Where have I heard that before?

Thanks for the suggestions so far but no-one has yet hit on the right tune - Janet was on the right track I think but Nola is a Schottische and somewhat quicker than the tune she suggested. I have a picture in my mind of a couple of comics doing a sand dance to it in the days of black and white...
