and as I have now fully explained my point, and it is understood....I'm gone. Miss what ever steps you like.

I can neither agree or disagree. If you ASSUME every player does exactly the same thing, ie. only thinks, breaths, and plays in Concert pitch, then it is correct. That just is not the case though. Even in theory there are variables to consider, and the player here is the over-riding variable.

    Why?

When theory misses out steps, it is not a complete theory. I agree with the definition of the word as written here:- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theory

    Why?

If you only talk theory, there is no sound. You just can not exclude the player as was done. There is no direct relationship between a written part and the instrument, even in theory. Every player is the deciding factor on whether the instrument is or isn't transposing.

    Why?

I already posted it in this thread.... "In one sentence, when the note played and sounded are the same, no transposition by the instrument is done. The note played still being the one played by the player which can be different to that on any piece of paper read." So, if I call you an...

    Why?

This all came down to the following:- I disagreed with a statement made and badly explained my view point. A number here, rather than attempting to reach a consensus of understanding decided it was better to put me in a corner. I knew what I meant was right, so was not going to back down...

    Why?

When you as the player transpose anything to concert pitch, you as the player do that, not the instrument. It is what the player does that is the variable factor.

    Has to be said.... Obviously:biggrin:

    Why?

I did carry this on with defnotsimon through PM's. I do believe that there is agreement, but I will not post it here, It belongs in the thread. As for Bayerd question. I have always know when a instrument is transposing, thanks. ;)

    Why?

I agree. Just because someone doesn't like the thread should not mean nobody is allowed to play, especially when giving zero reason

for people who don't understand what a "transposing instrument" is

Music is not the issue surely. Whether a C is always a C in the mind of the player is. All players must know of Concert pitch as it is an observed reference point, but many do not learn to play with parts written in it. It is the process of getting from what is written on the part to the...

for people who don't understand what a "transposing instrument" is

Not selective at all. Explain to me how if I can not read a part written out in Concert pitch how I play it if I do not transpose it in my head? The only alternative is to not play the part. The choices here are- 1. Learn to read and play in Concert pitch so matching the sound produced...

for people who don't understand what a "transposing instrument" is

You are right 13, but only when everything is in Concert pitch, which parts are not always. The players of these instruments either read concert pitch or don't. If they don't, then they need to transpose to a key in which they can create the sound required, ie. A Eb player who only reads music...

for people who don't understand what a "transposing instrument" is

So with this I can fully agree. It all depends on the point of view of the player as to whether there is transposition or not. It isn't just Brass Bands though. Wind Bands generally have Parts written out for the instrument, depending on pitch, ie. not in Concert pitch. The exception seems...
