Haha, I'll need to employ the football manager tactic of pinning this up on the bandroom wall! If Celtic can beat Barca, anything can happen! Can Tony Watt play the cornet??

With only 7 weeks till the Scottish Championships there is not a lot of news about moves and bands making the final player signings in preparation for the big day, whats going on, us non players need to know (well would like to know) whats going on, anyone have any news ?

I have heard a rumour that there could be up to 13 bands in the 4th section this year which would be excellent news if it turns out to be true does anyone know which other 3 bands are thinking about entering this year. Also heard that an Ayrshire band (?) may be in trouble hopefully this is just a rumour.

Whats the goss in Scotland

Ok it looks like it was just a rumour about another 3, 4th sections bands, but I have heard that Whitburn are well down the road to getting a second band up and running with former players but just run out of time for this years contest, many will look forward to hearing this new band once its up and running.

Only the Co-op and Kinneil announcing major signings for the Championships, some big names into the Co-op which will keep them as Favs for the contest, and the signings at Kinneil with Craig Anderson in charge I think makes them worthy of Paddy's 4/7F price tag, I don't think any one else in the second section will get a look there. It appears all quiet from the other top bands this year on signings....... are they all keeping thier plans under wraps !!!

The set pieces will test all the bands in every section with the Championship, second and third the most challenging, but will make for a great weekend of listening and good luck to all the bands as they prepare on these cold winter nights.

Hey Scottish Critic, your right not been much announcments of recent signings, not sure if I think thats a good or a bad thing. I know that there has been a massive amount of transfers happen since the start of the year. Hopefully all it means are people are in their band halls practicing and not concerned about who is playing with who! :) Looking forward to Perth !

That's probably the likely top three in each section, but the order could easily be different.
Fourth section is probably hardest to call because of the variability of performance on the day.
Anywhere in the top half would suit me. If we do better its a bonus.
As long as I leave the stage feeling I have given it my best I don't really mind what the adjudicator says.

I completely agree Gordon. Anything can happen on the day, especially with a predraw. It's always a satisfying feeling coming off stage knowing that your best has been given. And it's 2 men in a box whose opinion counts. It's looking like a good weekend.

Good call Neillyboy I have to agree with you on the top section, I think The Co might be too strong on the day to be beaten and I do feel Kingdom are long overdue a top two slot, and with some new faces at Whitburn it might take a little while for then to settle in but it has been said in the past, everytime someone writes off Whitburn that's when they are most difficult to beat, so it should be a good days contest.

Section one will see Newmilns start off as favs especially with Nigel at the helm, but Newtongrane are a band with a huge amout of pride and history and they will be looking to get back into the top section again.

The second section appears to be one of the hardest to get out of and Kinneil will be favs but I see Tullis clipping right at thir heels and I feel it will be a tussle between these two for the top slot with Kilmarnock right behind them.

Third section and a test piece like Hollywood, now this is really going to sort the bands out and some experienced people in front of the bands will make sure this is a great section, but I think Brass Sounds, Kingdom B and St Ronans won't be far away.

The thread on this forum about the choice of piece for this section has made quite interesting reading and I'm sure no band is taking the piece lightly, even top section bands struggle when only a few players are asked to play pp and Devon Fantasy has more than a few sections like that so for me it's Barrhead, Dunfermline and Tullis Intermediate

so my thoughts are (for what they are worth)

Championship Section
1. Coop
2. Kingdom Brass
3. Whitburn

First Section
1. Newmilns
2. Newtongrange
3. Bon Accord

Second Sction
1. Kinneil
2. Tullis Russell
3. Kilmarnock

Third Section
1. Brass Sounds
2. Kingdom B
3. St Ronans

Fourth Section
1. Barrhead
2. Dunfermline
3. Tullis Intermediate

But whatever the results it looks like being two great days of music making, especially for the listener and good luck to all the bands.

I'm sure that Kirky will produce a very good performance this year. They have a very able young band with Phil McCann at the helm.

I am actually looking forward to this. My contest nerve problem seems to have subsided. Travel from my part of Edinburgh is difficult because of roadworks so as I need to be there on the Friday too I am thinking of booking a hotel and making a weekend of it so I can see some other bands - if i can persuade my girlfriend (who thinks conductors wear uniforms to band practices because of Brassed Off).

Kirkie are due a good result soon as they have had a bit of a tough time the last few years. Would love to see them win something again.

Best of luck to all bands. Wouldnt like to take a guess at the winners but am sure then men in the box will do a good job at that on our behalf. Think it should be a decent weekend of contesting!

I know its a bit of fun guessing the winners but just out of interest how many of you will be in the hall listening to other bands?
