I take your points guys, and after short contemplation, I agree with you that it would certainly sort out 1st Section bands and perhaps inspire aspiration.
If it was chosen for 1st Section Area I'd be coming out of retirement and peddling my dubious talents to local 1st Section outfits !!
Just for the record Andi, I think you were a bit harsh implying that I had contempt for 1st Section Bands, I played in one for a lot of years.
It is just that on the two occasions I contested on LD with Imps in the 1960s, I found it a H£ll of a blow and needed stamina and endurance from first note to the last ~ and I was only in my teens at the time !!
I reckon ( Not contemptuously) that a goodly proportion of bands playing it would be on their metaphorical knees by the last chord.
Another piece that I think would be a good 1st Section Area test would be "Tournament for Brass" (Ball) ~ Perhaps a bit cheesy for for modern young banders taste, but some lovely musical moments.
It has to be said though, that IMHO, the ending is absolutely dreadful. Almost as if EB suddenly had composers block and brought the whole thing to an abrupt and ugly end, but, who am I to criticise the great man ?
