I never did any of the tmp bands, but can remember meeting up with a few people I met on here at a couple of (in)famous Pontins!

Your quite correct about the slanging matches and about getting the news. If you want to find out what happened at a contest its always here first.

Well I, for one, don't want my boss to find my posts on internet forums. If you don't know me anyway then what difference does it make? And if you do, through banding, then you'll probably know who I am from the band and instrument in my profile.

Ya know what... I am really happy to read what people have written in this thread, and it seems obvious to me that from comments made in here, most members - a very high percentage, would want tMP to continue.
That's very heartening to read, thanks.

Exactly my point Worzel. Your profile isn't completely anoymous. You list your instrument and band. It wouldn't take long if I was that way inclined to find out who you are either by looking on the band website or asking Simon your MD. I dont need to know your shoe size to respect you as a player and your opinions and posts (which I do btw)
For all I know a completely anonymous profile in the way I described could be a 12 year old with a valid email address who's only playing experience is a vuvuzela while the world cup was on. If this is so, I may be less inclined to value his/her opinion while engaged in a thread about the merits of the various sizes of Wick mouthpiece, as opposed to someone with the gravitas of posters such as bassbonetone, moomindave or elliebone, to name a few.

Of course we do John, that's why we post, even the negative ones I daresay. I certainly do.

Yeah, fair point.

I agree if someone is trouble making and possibly anonymously using insider information to stir it up. But I think with technical discussions people's posts speak for themselves. Maybe my perspective is a bit abnormal because I'm usually more interested in the arguments put forward for positions taken than the positions themselves.

tMP is great for ex banders like me to keep in touch with old mates and to keep a lazy eye on whats happening in the band world. I don't get involved in any deep debates anymore as I feel rather detached now. But it is good to see the sensible (and not so sensible ) input from old chums and others.
Fear not, I keep peering in from the closet - that I escape from on occasional saturday evenings

you are right Dave, this site is very quiet. there have been a few quite big news items recently that hardly got a mention, amazingly.
i think there are two main reasons.
there is natural attrition as lots of people discover the site, engage with it, move on. there aren't many people in the band world who haven't looked at this site at some point - and of course 90% were never going to stay long term. the internet is evolving. a web forum seems a bit "90s" now compared with social networking etc. (which will also go out of fashion i'm sure). people also divide their attention between more sites.
secondly, the effect of over-moderation is definitely everywhere. i don't think it excessive to ban obnoxious behaviour, but there is a creeping "PC brigade" attitude which seems to neuter debate. the main potential draw of a site like this is "juicy gossip" and strong opinions, and these seem to be clamped down on far more than personal slanging matches. i have just been reading a thread about york going into administration where someone was jumped on for claiming that one euph player sounds better than another. if you can't even hold an opinion like that, real debate has no chance.
a secondary effect of the moderation is that there is a lot of really boring trolling. i enjoy reading the more amusing trolls, but these have mostly got bored or banned (some of these guys were playing at the very highest level of our movement, using this site for a bit of light hearted banter, and also had the most to add in terms of insight and gossip) leaving very tedious exchanges between the overly touchy people that remain and the milder trolls (see higher up this thread for numerous examples).
with a lot of time and effort it is possible to remove or ban all controversial posts - but be careful what you wish for because that doesn't leave much! i suspect that some of the moderators dream of a site where every thread is a copy-and-paste 4br release followed by general agreement and congratulation.

i should have added that the quietness is itself a vicious circle - if i log in to find out about a banding event that has been on all the national news bulletins and there are 12 posts adding absolutely nothing, then i'm not going to post. if i do linger a minute on the site and see that the remaining threads are all personal slanging matches between very tedious, touchy people, it will be longer before i return.

I must agree with you Super Ph, I don't find the official moderation too bad but there are 'holier than thou' zealots on this site who beat people up for no good reason. They group together and attack like a pack of wolves sometimes. All too often the really big stories are stifled by these people.
I have often thought some people hauled over the coals on this site were actually forced into aggressive arguments by simply defending themselves against such group bullying.
