Car crash contesting. There's probably about ten bands in the country who could play it properly. It was used at the Scottish open two years ago and proved itself to be too tough a test for most bands.

It would sort out the best bands to the top though (in theory, depending on who is in the box)

But what if none of the bands in a given area could play it? Some might play the first section better, some the slow, some the finale - how does that sort out the bands?

4th section bands need something that requires and encourages players to go home and practice...
As an MD, you're free to get 'stuck into' more challenging music any time you want - you don't have to wait for someone to select it for a contest. As for motivating your players to practice the piece - programme it in a concert, point out that an audience will be paying money to listen and are entitled to expect a well-prepared performance. As a regular concert-goer myself, that's certainly what I'd expect. Good luck!

Jim - thank you. We do all the above already, and it has helped us improve our playing/concentration/performance/confidence immensely, and have used our test pieces in concerts (with the exception of Devon Fantasy). We even played Saddleworth festival overture in our Christmas concert because of it's link with the local carols in our neck of the woods and it went down very well.

I still think the 4th section would benefit from something just a touch more demanding this year at the area contest.

Has anyone got any ideas on the 1st section? I'm not very familiar with the pool of pieces which are likely/possible, any suggestions?

Totally agree, but I bet they trawl out the usual boring drab stuff that's drives younger players from Brass banding in their droves again !

Bit more than rumour - I hear people who 'should know' are buying the music !! 'kin hard thou, we looked at it a few years ago as own choice -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=313rutzdH0E

Don't think we should drag out 'old stuff' give the new guys a platform - even this is pushing 10 years old ??
