What do you fancy for 2008 Lower Section Finals to play as your test piece

anything thats technical for trombones and not just a big blast or 1 thats just got loud sections with top f's and g's in it, not that it really matters as the pieces are now announced and i wont be playing in the final anyway.

2-symphonic music
3-diversions on a bass theme
4-st.austell suite

all tough pieces for each section, would make the bands work put it that way

How's about having a Peter Graham Finals.
1st. On Alderley Edge.
2nd Renaisance.
3rd Shine As A Light.
4th Dance in the Park. (I think its called.)

All wonderful pieces which may bring in the listeners.

I can't see any bands getting anywhere close to On Alderley Edge.
I'd swap Dances in the Park with Shine as the Light. Put Prisms as the 1st section piece or possibly The Essence of Time - but even that's quite hard!

Diversions on a Bass Theme is tough for the top section, let alone 3rd!

And I think you'll find that I didn't say they hadn't. I merely said that I thought that On Alderly Edge was far too hard for the 1st section, and personally think that even the Essence of Time is too hard for the 1st section - granted there are some very good 1st section bands who will play it very well.

No offence meant. I wasn't dissing Eric Ball or The Wayfarer - it is a great piece. It's just that we didn't play it very well at the areas last year and wouldn't relish playing it / working on it again relatively soon afterwards. I'm sure we'd feel differently if we had done better last year!

I think Un vie de matelot would be a great choice, Wayfarer used last year in regionals so won't be that.Triumphant Rhap would be enjoyed by all.
If you want a modern piece that will test bands and audience what about 'prague' by Judith Bingham. on second thoughts perhaps not a good idea!

Having Played Prague when it was the area test in the championship section on The end chair.. I think your second thought i prefer LOL ...

For the 1st Section I think that there should be a sterner test for the bands and a Championship Section piece should be used. After all, this is one step from the Championship Section.

I'd like to see Blitz, Brass Metamorphosis (Curnow) or Chivalry.
