Starting as a Conductor...

Starting to conduct seems to be a tricky area for you to get your foot in the door.

So, where does one start?

I'm studying at Salford, and I would like to major in conducting, so I'm planning in advance! Anyone got any constructive comments on how and where they started conducting, or any advice for a young conductor? Are bands willing to take a chance on an unproven, but learning conductor?

Any tips/ideas/comments appreciated

I am interested to hear how some of todays conductors started - and for starters, Richard Evans's book was a great start, finding out how and where he started his musical carrear.
