    An excellent day, at an excellent venue (must be looked at for the Rally now surely?) - but the highlight for me personally (and the family of course) was my son Deian, aged 5 and 9 months, playing in his first ever solo contest - only a few months after picking up a cornet for the first time! Playing 'Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star' he did us all proud and came 7th out of 11 competitors in the under 10 section.

    </proud Dad>

    However - on a more disappointing note - it was a little concerning to once again see the same list of bands sending competiors to this contest (much the same as the Rally to be honest). I just don't get it sometimes, why these bands don't support contests which are quite literally, right on their doorstep. What more do some people want, if an excellently run day, at a state-of-the-art venue and with two top class players as adjudicators, aren't enough?

    Anyway - that rant isn't going to stop the feel-good feeling I have inside of me today!

    Oi Dad, shove over out the way, let Deian read his message.

    Well done Deian, you little star.

    OK, Dad, you can have your computer back now.

    Up the 'well! Although I never played for Holywell I'm from there (my mum and dad still live there) and having seen the ups and downs the band has had over the last quarter century I'm delighted to see them tasting some success, both here and in the wider contest arena. Plus Peter is a quality player..

    Well done to all winners, esp little Deian!

    Where was the contest held? When I last took part in this contest (about 20 years ago) it used to be in a school in Bangor. Guess it's moved since then if Dyl is describing it as "state of the art"!

    It always used to be a great day out though - it was my first experience of contesting, so I always look back on it quite fondly!

    No, seriously Dave - the contest has had a few homes since its days at Friars School in BAngor - has been in Ysgol Dyffryn Ogwen for the last few years, but was held this year at Galeri in Caernarfon - http://www.galericaernarfon.com - with the contest being split between two 'studios' - an excellent venue with on-site bar and cafe, and easy access to all Caernarfon has to offer. We've played a couple of gigs there recently and it's a top class venue - it also has its own theatre hall that can hold about 200 people.

    Guilty as charged - didn't read the post properly

    I'm glad this contest is still going though - even if it is only a few bands that support it these days.
