Aussie scoops BBC Young Brass Soloist Title

20 year old Brendon Wheeler has just scooped the BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Soloist Final held at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester.

Brenden Wheeler, an Australian, is currently studying music at the University of Salford in Manchester under David King. His achievements in the UK so far, include the Best Instrumentalist prize at the Scottish Open Brass Band Championships last November together with his success at tonights competition.

His chosen pieces for the final were ‘Flight to Sparta' from ‘Three Worlds' by Peter Meechan and ‘The Holy Well' by Peter Graham. Brendon is currently Solo Euphonium with the Hepworth Persimmon Band.

Congratulations to Brendon and the other three finalists (Vicki, Sophie and Nick) from everyone at The MouthPiece.com

Once again tMP gets there before anywhere else on t'internet!!!

Just want to pass my congrats to Brenden, and all the other finalists.

To tMP member Vic, I think we'd all agree that she already is a star in the making and her time will come when she will win every single competition imaginable!!! Listening to her last night on LTTB, assured me of how fantastic a player she is, and at such a young age! It is clear that over future years she will grow into a great player, so hope she won't get down about not winning this competition (although she sounded VERY bouncy on the phone just now!!! ). I'm proud of how well you've done Vic, as i'm sure everyone else is and I salute you!

Well done to Brendan and to the other finalists.

I was gutted that I couldn't make it down to Manchester to hear these talented musicians.

never seen naomi as faced as that! quite entertaining!

Well done to everyone who played, all sounded really good (when you could hear them over the not-so gracious accompaniment )
Bren had the X-factor on the day, his one was the 'special' performance (and not in a mongy way)
We managed to make sure he didnt make it home anyway
Wonder if his uncle ended up with any more sofas or bikes in the front room in the morning

suprised you lasted the duration colin, you were rangooned before we even got to college bar, never mind scu!

yeah until your the one who is taking her home!!!!!!

i agree with the accompaniment thing though, it was hard to hear the soloist at times, not sure whether that is something to do with the hall though, because mr childs wasnt making any attempt at quietening the band abit so we could hear the soloist.

i remember from the youth band nationals last year that my mum thought the balance sounded wrong where she was sat, yet the adjudicators thought it was right. my mum is gunna sit as close to the adjudicators as she can next time to test this theory
