Don't get me wrong though, do not under estimate how hard this piece is to get a good band performance out of.

We did too, We actually corrected them all last week, cos we'd fallen into the "too slow trap" especially in the first and third.

Our sop player felt the same!! But when you get to it and play it, and it doesn't sit right, it has to be corrected!! It's very hard to balance the rehearsal on this piece IMO

It makes players think.............about basic things like playing together well, playing in tune and making lovely sounds.

As I said in the first part of my post above..... I completely agree with this. That's part of the challenge of contesting on this piece of music we have been given.

I don't see many using it as...

It still has to be played, and played correctly......and musically.......and well. Keeping the players motivated through the rehearsals is part of the challenge of the set piece IMHO.

Thankfully...

there is plenty in this to get right (and plenty to get wrong!!)
