I think that there's only myself and Mike from that thread who still regularly frequent these parts!

I'm surprised that they hadn't come met more often.... (I suspect that the comparison only includes results where both conductors placings are known?)
...
I think you've cracked it.
And if they are all the same person, which I suspect they are, that is some conducting career! Nigh on 50 years, 137 contests and success at all levels. Respect.
That's what I thought, but intervening time period puts some doubt in my mind.
Goodness me, forget what I said about British Vita and Joseph. If you look at them in this period, it's an absolute car crash of Johns, Jacks and Josephs! What a mess.
1955 Nationals - BBR have conductor as Jack Harrison, BBA document lists John Harrison. Interestingly Jack Harrison is also credited by BBR as taking British Vita in '72 - I thought we'd pinned...
Also, having clarified the Harton entry as being John, this now means that the 1951 Mirrlees reference to Joseph has become anomalous, with him apparently conducting Mirrlees at Belle Vue in '51 and...
That Brass Band Archive document may shed some light on the other references, if any of them relate to National Finals. I would check myself, but haven't really got the time or inclination!
Brass Band Archive data suggests Harton 1957 Joseph Harrison was in fact John Harrison.

Not sure where the Harton reference to a Joseph Harrison comes from. 4BR results archive for '57 Nationals refers only to a J.Harrison and I think that's where the data for the BBR entry was taken...
It's all clarified rather conveniently in a golden oldie thread from 2002 which can be found here
Some real blasts from the past in that thread!
Far from it. The myth of the "level playing field" has long been debated. The fact of the matter is that it degenerates into a "who can afford the best doping programme" competition. It is explained...
If we are to parallel this with sport, then there is leeway within most sports anti-doping regime to allow for certain otherwise banned substances where there is an identified medical need and they...
"....when the first section played two great 19th century overtures (Carnaval Romain for the areas, and La Forza del Destino at the nationals), both of which had been mutilated by Frank Wright."
...
I'll play for you, if you want.
A nail in the coffin for registration in general??
Open and Spring Festival opt for new registration procedures
Here's hoping, anyway.
No, it doesn't, but it does explain why the website's disappeared!
I'd echo most of the above. Stick to EEb to begin with - it's far more forgiving than that it's larger cousin. BBb is, in my opinion one of the most challenging seats in the band - very good BBb Bass...
See post #23 of this thread.
Usually:
2nd Section Sunday Morning
1st Section Sunday lunch/afternoon
Top Section Sunday late afternoon/evening
4th and 3rd Section on Saturday, can't remember in which order.
This system assumes that in all cases Standard of Player ∝ Grading of Band. Which clearly isn't true.
In a registration free world, said player would be able to play for both bands. It might be a bit awkward trying to satisfy both bands with rehearsal attendance prior to the contest, but surely that...
Absolutely. The idea that registration in some way regulates what standard of band a player plays for is complete nonsense. It is utterly pointless and should be scrapped in its entirety....
Westoe Band can be found @westoeband oddly enough. Or indeed at https://www.facebook.com/westoebrass
How long before we have people shouting that its unfair that the NoE 2nd section have the same number of reps as the Midlands 2nd Section when there's only 5 bands (or such like)........??? Just...
